@5Cent ironically there is a connection. For employers paying minimum wage to $15/hr they rely on college kids, young adults, and other entry level workers. We have 3 colleges in Lima. This imports a massive young work force to the area. The kids still don't work. They live off student loans. This blame can be pointed at multiple factors, but the universities are partially to blame. These kids leave school expecting to make big bucks. They leave with big loans.

Off track just a little but I can't get a phone call back from odot. I have called multiple times and emailed 4 different people. Nobody has tried to get ahold of me. It's for a job that we are doing and had some questions about it. I guess that don't really give a damn about it. Unless something gets fugged up then I'm sure they will be calling wanting answers. Blows my mind that people can't do their job.

Not contractor specific, but relevant to the current discussion, I have tried to fill many positions over the years across 4 different companies . Professional roles where bachelors and graduate degrees are sought. I’m amazed at the lack of substance and energy that is illustrated by applicants. I’m talking again, college graduates with 5, 10, even 20 years experience with very literal substance to back their “qualifications”.

Wowsers, this took the fork turn to the left quickly. I understand the connection of trade vs a 4yr college degree but I thought this thread was about contractor and how they do/don't run a good business.

I love seeing this gap in trade skills. It is about damn time America got back to basics. For the reasons stated above, it's time for the 2nd Industrial Revolution!
the pendulum is swinging back in the direction of teaching manual skills in high school again already. and none too soon. it amazes me how little manual skills people have, generally speaking. I can tell you for sure that the kids my wife teaches wouldn't know which end of a screwdriver to use or how to pour themselves a bowl of cereal for breakfast. destined for college and greatness, every single one of them.

Finding a good employee is the exception to the rule regardless of business, industry or organization. I had a frontline manager tell me the other day they hired a maintenance mechanic that didn't know a crescent wrench from a pair of channel locks. WTF?!?

I will add I'm in Cleveland for a conference dedicated to workforce. Yesterday, one of Ohio's best resources for merging business and education said to me: "Despite our strategic resources, Ohio is in a bad place with it's workforce and it will get worse before it gets better."

The student loan comment is spot on.

It’s supply and demand.

The supply of money for college is very large. That just increases the demand for that money. Aka rising college costs.

College costs have risen faster than everything else. Money supply is the reason.

Reduce student loans and a person could work and pay for their college like they did for many years before the government F’d it up.

So an update. One local roofer had a subcontractor give me a call back and verbally quoted me $250-300. Another roofer who has a long established business and has a Hispanic accent called me himself and quoted $100 max. Espanosa Roofing for the win.

Sorta crazy getting an Quote over the phone. Both prices are decent. The 100 dollar quote is crazy. But hey to each their own.
Anyhow with out seeing it, they have no clue how sealed the shingles are if they are brittle they could run in to a big problem.
Personally I would never give an estimate over the phone with out seeing the job.
Just make sure they don’t run up on the roof with a few tubes of Geosell or worse a bucket of tar.

Post buyers inspection requested repairs. As long as they're a licesened contractor I don't care if they shit under the flashing to seal them. Future issues will be between them and the buyer. Honestly though its simple. Two boots replaced and nail down / reseal of about 5 roof penetration flashings.

Sadly, there is little lure to OH. From a booming economy/industry/development, we simply don’t have to offer what other places have. Many folks would recommend their children pursue opportunities elsewhere because of this.
