Thanks Guys! It was definitely a great afternoon.

Well wasted indeed Phil. We talked about hunting and other things in life that are even more important. It's really hard to find time to do those things these days.
Amen to that my friend. Well done!

These are really late but whatever... lol.

Scouting trip leading up to the weekend. Glad I decided to bring the camera along.

You can't enjoy some of the simple pleasures... err vices when you're bowhunting...

I had good light for practicing some portrait photography...

Even good light can't help some people... Just kiddin' brother!

Thanks Guys. Our "stranger" snuck this pic of me taking a pic of Timber. He's slick like that!! It was definitely fun getting to hang out with him even if for just a quick hunt.

Good stuff as always, Sean. You have a real nack for capturing the essence of the outdoors in your photographs. I would like to get into that someday I hope. Glad to see Steve was able to break away from work and enjoy some bird hunting!

After a lengthy scheduling and logistics conversation with "The Warden" (aka my wife) it was determined that even though I'm on vacation all week my wife is not. Her feeling is that 8 miles is too far for our children to walk home and they will still need assistance from Uber (aka me). We flipped a coin and I decided to hunt Monday morning. The day looked like this: hunt, lunch, early voting, stop at CVS, pick up daughter from her after school activity, pick up son from basketball practice, meet wife at home for dinner.

I did not kill a deer Monday, but took pictures of stuff to pass the time. In fact I did not see a deer until I climbed down at 11:00 am and moved a trail camera. As I was placing the camera at a new location, with my arms hugging the tree, a doe almost ran into me while being pushed by a young buck. She skidded to a stop about 10 feet from me, our eyes locked and jaws dropped, both surprised as hell to see each other. With my bow on the ground and my arms wrapped around the trunk of the oak there was nothing I could do at this point. She paused for a few seconds, looked back at her annoying pursuer and turned 90* to the right to bound off unscathed... at least by me.

The camera was hung, so I gathered my bow and started walking back to the truck. Then it dawned on me I should nock an arrow and slowly still hunt to the field edge. You never know what could happen.

Well, if he was a doe he would've been shot. Since he wasn't, he was lucky. Hopefully we meet again in a few years under similar circumstances.

Here's some pictures from Monday morning.

It wouldn't be a hunt without squirrels keeping me entertained. This guy and I came face to face as he climbed down the tree I was in.

The second day of deercation was wide open for me so I decided to pack a lunch and make it an all day affair. I made a slight move to hunt a pinch point between two fields. In the new tree I can still shoot out into the field as well as cover the woods where deer like to funnel through.

The inside corner to the field edge I hunted on Monday. My other stand is 40 yards up the edge and a few feet into the woods.

The woods view. It's a 30 yard shot to the point where the two runoffs meet. You can also see the natural ground blind that my son and I hunted from a week earlier. It's just to the left of the center of the picture.

The morning was wet as a light rain fell until about 10:00 am. I saw a few small bucks and three does. I was planning to shoot one of the does but she never offered a clean shot. After she and her friends left I made the plan to climb down at lunch time to trim my shooting lanes a little. Had I done a better job this summer I would've had a shot at 25 yards. Oh well...

Between the rain dampening the forest floor and the winds whipping through the trees, it was very difficult to hear anything approaching. At some point this guy sauntered through.

"Is that a deer?"

e_DSC_0583 by Sean Curran, on Flickr

Nope, just another squirrel...

The sun came through a few times in the afternoon, lighting up the remaining yellow leaves so they almost glowed...

At about 2:00 pm this 8 point showed up, checked the scrape and moved along. I recorded him for a minute then tried to grab my camera. He never offered up any shots with the camera, and had he been a little bigger I would've grabbed my bow instead of my phone.

I saw two more young bucks after the 8 point, then nearing last light I heard what I was certain was a B&C buck coming my way. Or maybe I was getting delusional from sitting in a tree all day...

DSC_0611 by Sean Curran, on Flickr

That was it. Just this raccoon and another getting out early to start their day. All together I saw 7 bucks and 4 does. No shooters just yet, but it's November... anything can happen.

Thanks guys!

Today I got out for the afternoon. I was in the stand by 1:30 pm ready to catch up with a buck cruising for a doe in heat. The scene was already scripted in my mind all I needed was for the deer to cooperate. They didn't. My first sighting was 3 does late in the afternoon. They weren't close enough for a shot. Shortly after, a young buck followed their trail across the field and into the woods. Even if he was a mega-monster buck deer he was out of bow range. So went the afternoon. I managed to take some pictures to pass the time.

They call it the golden hour for good reason...

My bow is getting anxious holding all those arrows...

I don't know where the rut it, but it ain't where I've been hunting. Time to pack up and head for new adventures...
