Cutting the Cord: Eliminating cable or satellite...

Sounds like I need to get on that. I was going to wait till after this deal with Maddy. But now she’s pissed she can’t even watch TV😂
 
It is beyond time to take on this endeavor. Our cable/internet bill is well over $250 a month now. A few months back I picked up a cheap smart TV for the bedroom as an experiment on trying to get used to everything before we did it to the living room TV. This past weekend we picked up a Vizio smart TV for the living room and have it just about set up with everything. The TV allows you to cast video to it from your phone which makes it even better for this cable cut. Only thing we would like to pick up now would be an HD antenna for local channels, mostly for so-called news. We still will be stuck with Comcast/Xfinity internet as it is the fastest for our area. Terry will need that for work at home and with streaming most everything it would be the best option. So, we should essentially be saving about $180 a month by doing this.

Chuck, what’s their baseline internet price? I’d start there and then work your way up the ladder if needed.....

I believe the plan we are on right now for internet will be right at $80/month once we cut cable. We could go with less but with Terry doing her work from home we feel we need to stay with that speed or higher if we notice problems with streaming.

Good move, you won't regret it. Feel free to get ahold of me if you have questions or problems, I'd be happy to help. I've cut the cord a long time ago, going on at least fours years of better. Don't miss that outrageous cable television bill at all. Pretty much nothing I am not able to get ahold of or watch that is out there being televised live and I do not use any antenna except for local FM/AM radio stations on my digital theater stereo systems.

Only problem I have is watching live sports. Internet wouldn't hold for the game Monday night so I didn't get to see it. Wasn't worth the Hulu live upgrade to me. I didn't want to fall back into the trap so I just made the choice to let it go. I will plan better next time.

We just had to get 2 new phones through Verizon (our cell carrier for the family) as Jenna's had a hardware failure and Allen's was going to need a new battery installed. The plan my wife found was a buy one cell, get one free and it included ESPN+, Disney+ and Hulu. They will be ours to use as long as we keep the unlimited data with Verizon. Something to be aware of if by chance you can find a deal.

Ive been trying to upgrade my phone that past few weeks and they seem to be sold out of EVERYTHING. Anything Samsung Galaxy S10 and newer SOLD OUT

Ours are all I-phones and with Christmas just behind us they were out of those til this past week. Probably the reason on the Samsung's as well?

Biggest struggle has been finding shows that we forgot about and now want to watch. With being able to cast just about any show from phone app up onto the big screen it has been a life saver. Pretty cool when we can watch some of our HS sports now and then up there by doing this.

So 1300’ off the road and living with the woods. Paid $80/mo with HughesNet, Now $40/mo with Verizon gateway wireless unlimited data. Bought a couple Roku for $13 flat. Had basic Dish for $115 which went up to $162/mo. Just bought Fubo TV this week for $65/mo. I now have 6-7 outdoor channels over 3 previously with Dish. Dish got fired today. Everything seems to be running well. Guess we’ll use the cost savings to fire my wife’s 403b retirement savings plan (teacher). @giles @Wildlife

After numerous price hikes, and because they dropped coverage of Indians games, I got rid of Hulu a few months ago. It was getting close to $70 per month. Eff that… I’ll get cable or satellite before I pay that for Hulu. Anyway, I picked up a subscription to Peacock in the meantime. Mainly because I wanted to binge-watch Yellowstone while I was off work. But we’ve since come to like it for everything really. It has pretty good coverage of the Olympics, which my wife always gets into. I rarely watch TV anymore but when I do this seems to fit the bill.
