Is that an ash? It’s a nice rub, but might be more exaggerated in depth if it’s susceptible to the ash bore and dead standing. That’s my guess!!

I see them like this every year late in the season. Usually they are on soft wood. I don't know if the horns start itiching and the get deeper in the tree or if they are claiming new territory. Whatever they are doing I think the rubs are always bigger and heavier in late season

I see, so the old marks are what you are talking about. Tree is dead and bark has peeled away from the trunk.
It’s right by one of my stands and I’ve been watching it over the years. It used to be much more evident, but like when people carve names in trees, the scar widens and distort over time. That pic is about 3-4 years after I discovered it. Just a guess though.
