The chicory/clover plot is a huge hit right now but it has volunteer competition. It is about 40% clover, 25% chicory, 25% ragweed and 10% miscellaneous. There was no ragweed in that field when we killed it off in March. I don’t know if the ragweed was in the seed mix or blew in but the way it is dispersed it almost had to be mixed in. The deer are slamming that field though.

Ragweed seed is almost everywhere. Killing a field with herbicide just gives it a chance to finally grow. Seeds can sit dormant in soil for years. One of my favorite wildlife plants.

We mowed the plots this weekend and here is an update:
Clover/chicory (planted in April) is looking great minus the ragweed mixed in.
Alfalfa (planted in May) is not good. I think all the rain stunted it at about 4” and grass has overtaken it. Deer are using it but I’m afraid we will have to do something else next year.
Clover (planted in 2020) is also looking great. It’s starting to get more grass mixed in but there is tons of clover forage still available.
