Goin snaring

Brock, I bought a 2 hr. DVD about Coyote Trapping. It's with Hal Sullivan. Canine's 2000.....If your interested, I will see you get it when I'm done.

I am, and appreciate the offer! My 8 year old has me pulling up every coyote snarring vid on YouTube every chance we get!
I have a DVD a buddy made a few years back and sent to me. Its called a "Year with a Longbow". He's a big trad hunter, and made a pretty good video out of his season. He killed 30+ critters with a longbow that year. I'd be glad to send it to you if you'd like to see it. He's an Ohio boy too, and some here may know him - Doug Schlabach. I think he still has a farm in Carrol Co. Let me know if you'd like me to send it to you. It isn't one of these instructional type things, just killing and fun.

I just finished watching it......Will have to say it is a great video and very informative TOO. I plan on seeing it one more time here and will get ahold of you and get it out. Sure would like to see the video you have.....Will get ya the address soon as I get this ready to go out.

I went out to pull all my snares today. We've had some developments at the shop that will require me to be there everyday, open to close for a time, so I am not going to be able to spend the needed time out chasing coyotes. While I was out today, my son and I found another den, and it appears that a coyote has started digging on the one I had found previously. It is now my plan to leave the area alone for a while and wait to see what takes up residence there...and then kill them.

After pulling all of my sets, I decided to set just one. I have been finding a big set of yote tracks for the last month or so. There is one little pinch point where I have seen the tracks twice. I set a snare there as I can sort of check it from the road and won't require a great deal of my time.

Here are some den pics...

Well, I didn't have much time, but with only one snare still out I had time to check it between my dentist appointment and re-opening the shop at 4. I probably looked pretty sporty heading across the plowed field with a pair of shorts on along with knee high rubber boots and toting my revolver, but it worked. :)

I have been finding one set of BIG yote tracks since I have started snarring. He missed two of my set ups back when we had snow on by 20 yards or so. I figured I may get him eventually just because I had so many sets out. I never did. Mason and I pulled all our snares the other day, and when doing so, I found the big tracks again on a muddy trail where I had seen them before. I had a snare within 15 feet of this trail, but never got him. So Mason and I made a new set on the other trail. Got him! He is big, and mean looking with one eye missing. He must have been a scrapper. He looked even more nasty all covered with mud. He's dead now.

BTW, the corner where I got the yote is one of my favorite "deer spots" in the world. I've killed four PY bucks within 100 yards of it, and the two big ones that Sean killed on that farm were also within 100 yards of that corner.

The mud certainly did not help his already ugly appearance. I felt sorta bad for him setting there in all that mess for the last hours of his life...so I shot him. :) As much as I dislike these things for what they are doing to our deer herd, I gotta admit they are pretty to see in the wild. There wasn't one pretty aspect of this situation. He was setting there like a tired, filthy dog awaiting death. Kinda sad really, but the end result was my goal - one less yote.

His head was even shaped uglier, and meaner looking than most. Most of them have a stream-lined sleek look, this ugly thing's head was just evil looking, box shaped like a pit bull or something...just mean looking.

Thanks fellas, was nice to get that ugly rascal on the last set up. If things change, I will get them back out there as I planned to make it a long spring for the yotes...still gonna get out there and see what I can find in those dens!
