Goin snaring

Me and a buddy went to check the snares today...no luck. We only hung four more, but my son and I will likely hang a few more tomorrow. We did scout the neighboring property but didn't find any bottlenecks to put a snare in. We are going to snoop around some more tomorrow.

Had fun today. Had two coons tied up. That was a blast, they sure are grumpy. No yotes in my snares, but I wasn't overly surprised. I scouted across the road the other day and need to set up some over there...gonna have to rig up some ground anchors first. Got permission to snare 'em on anothe piece of property today. It is the "sanctuary" where a lot of the deer we hunt spend a good deal of time. Seriously more sign in there than any place I have ever been. Ive tracked a couple deer across it and was always amazed. I stopped and talked with the landowner today as I hunt on both sides of his place and it would make my life a lot easier if I could cross his land. He said I could and I was welcome to set snares too. He has had that 75 acres and lived there for 58 years as claims to have only seen 2 bucks there in all that time! Funny, and hard to believe though I know he was being honest. I have a ton of pics of dandy bucks 75 yards from his barn.

Brock, catching coons would you need too raise the snares up a little higher???? I'm trying too educatee myself lol....

I would say yes. Those two were not as secured as they should have been and may have dropped down a little. I've been keeping the bottom of the loop about 10 inches or so. So far though I'm real happy not to have any issues with deer. I've had several pulled down by deer, but not hung up. I tried to set them in areas I would picture deer walking with their heads up....the coons I'm not too worried about. :)

Yes, indeed. Don't really know why I got these two. Heck, they are on trails smaller critters use a lot and they have missed the snares up till now. Beats me, hope they are high enough to miss em now. A skunk in one of them would be a real treat I'm sure. I can cut a coon loose, a skunk may just have to wait a while.

If you do get a skunk, shoot it with a slug in the spine right behind the front legs. Usually they will not spray with such a shot. (can only do this in season though.....LOL) The muscles used to spray run down the spine.

Cut some rebar to 40" today. I hope that will be long enough to hold a coyote with wet soil. Should be able to make some sets out in the open fields now.

The rebar will have a washer welded to the top. The stake will be driven down through the swivel on the snare. One of the farmers/buddies I hunt on is welding them up for me right now as I am at the pizza shop. I suspect he will show up with them here once he gets hungry. Will be a good trade for pizza. :)

Cool, can't wait too see how the load test works out..... :smiley_crocodile:

Me either! And my farmer/neighbor/buddy just walked out with his pizza.:) He said he would have 'em done by 9 am. Guess I will try to get some set out tomorrow!

This has been a great post Brock!! Congrats on your new found hobby and good luck to you on killing as many of those bastards you can!!

It is a blast for sure! It's really given me just that much more incentive to be in the woods, and that is about the only time I don't want to be somewhere else.:)

Got my stakes back this morning, but haven't made it out to the farm to set the open country snares yet. I may have to skip the bow shoot tomorrow morning to get out there. I won't be able to check the snares until midnight or so tonight, so I may just hold off till morning. I guess I'm a cold soul when it comes to yotes...really don't care that they may have to wait to be shot.

Been going back and forth on ordering some snares but I know I won't be able to check everyday. Living through you guys...lol

Great post man! You're getting my interest up. I see snare sets on ebay for 20 bucks a dozen including shipping, I think I'm gonna give em a try too. Anything to get rid of some yotes.

Brock....I've got a book on snares. It's called The Snareman ~ Introduction to the art of snaring the Fox, Coyote, Raccoon and Beaver. It's by Leonard Pavek who was a Great Snareman. It covers all snare angles including making and fixing snares. If you or anyone else is interested, I thought we could pass this one around the members and hopefully get something started which helps our passion for deer. Ya'll let me know who's next and I'll send it out ASAP!
