Going traditional

From what little I know about stick and string, I shoot a longbow better than a recurve. And coming from a compound junkie who isn't happy if he isn't hitting golf balls at 30-40 yards, it frustrates the dog shit out of me shooting a stick bow. Diablo lives close to you and he shoots the shit out of his bow, get with him sometime and get some lessons. I'll bring my recurve this weekend so you can shoot it TOO...

I'll bring my bow to the camp and I'll be glad to let you shoot to see how it feels Gordo. I'm sure we could show you a few things as well.

Gordo, sorry I am late chiming in in this. I have a 62" 37# @28" recurve. It was given to me and has no sentimental value. It has a good string and all it needs is arrows. I will bring it down and you can have it so that way you can start shooting at minimal cost. :D

Gordo,
Yes, it's all based on a 28" draw length...unless the bow manufacturer states otherwise, which is rare.

I agree with Beentown, about the 40 to 45 lb. bow, to get you started. That's the beauty of a take-down model, the limbs can be switched out for target or hunting.

Personally, I'd perfer to have a bow in the 47ish pound range for everything from 3D to hunting. Once I'd get used to it, it would all be the same and no compensating for different limb poundages. It's like the old saying of "beware of the man with one gun"...it's because he's knows it like the back of his hand.

Well im all set up with my bear grizzly recurve. 50#, 58 inches long.

Purchased it last thursday i believe, and in my mind have already come a good ways with it.

I will say in the first 5 days that this traditional gear is very addicting. Ive been shooting the shit out of it.

I'll be re-working a couple of my sets on each of my hunting properties.

Gotta get set up alot closer to the trails and lower to the ground to take away steep shot angles. When re-workin my sets i'll be looking to be set up no more than 10 yards from my anticipated kill zones. Its time to get even more up close and personal.

Its going to be a whole new dimension in bow hunting and im really looking forward to it.

Diablo stopped by today to give me some pointers and check the bow out.

Everything checked out decent, other then the arrows not being spined properly.

He's really going out if his way and is going to try to drop by tomorrow to adjust the brace height, and mess with adding weight to the arrow to try to stabilize its flight.

He's really steppin up and helpin a guy out.

Thanks man!

In the mean time, ill keep shooting the hell out of that bow to get myself ready to hit the woods.

Just like anything else its going to take alot of work and alot of time to be successful, but im confident i'll be able to harvest a deer with it by the end of the season.

Thanks for all the advice in this thread, and a big thanks to taylor.

I'll keep you guys posted

Gordo, glad you are enjoying your bow! The nice thing with them is the act of shooting itself is just fun, especially once you do it right once in a while! Hang with it!

Your right about that buddy. Its a great feeling when you feel it release like it should and the arrow hits it mark.

Its comparable to golf, which im horrible at!!!

My girl thinks im enjoying it to much! Haha. Now all i need is a loin cloth.

Im waiting patiently for my order from three rivers to get here. Got a dozen arrows and some magnus 2 blades, all recommended by diablo.

Im nearing ready to hit the woods with it. My 'first' shot in practice sessions has been on the money the last couple days. Im only talkin 15 yards max.

Im going to adjust two stands today that'll offer 10 yard shots.
