Well it’s all most that time of year. Whether it’s a tradition, a birth right, The week long Redneck super bowl, or all above.

The clock is slowly ticking to the arrival of booms and fresh smelling gun powder.(love that smell should make an air freshener that smells like that)

Sorta wondering what everyone’s favorite thing about this time of year is.

For me it’s just hanging out with buddies. Having a good time. I probably won’t hunt much. I’m not against gun hunting at all. I would just say I like the feeling of a bow in my hands a little bit more.

Plus it seems I have a gun season curse. I rarely ever see a nice buck when I gun hunt.

So my plans are to hang with buddies, hear their deer stories and keep them company. Usually when a buddy gets a deer I stay in and celebrate the kill with them. Listen to their stories. (They always change a little bit) but I get to spend a little time with each fella, individually. We don’t get together as often as we use to.

Wife,kids, life, sports, etc.

I’m hoping by Wednesday night we have enough deer to “Have AHeart party” my favorite part of a deer to eat.

Can’t wait for the shirt cutting ceremony if and when Somone misses. That’s always fun. My buddies are pretty hard to make blush etc. but at around 1130 pm. We put on our shirt cutting song. Say some pretty nasty things to the misser. Then video the ceremony. It’s priceless. 9/10 times ya see a red face that’s about the only time you ever see a red face with us. Always fun.

Anyhow just figured I’d post. What’s people’s goals, traditions, fun story, etc.. about gun season. Any favorite shenanigans?

I always take gun week to hunt with my family. My uncles and dad have always taken it off as lkng as i could remember. Hell back in the day even tho they bowhunted a little it seemed like everyone hunted all gun week. Some of my best memories are from gun week and being in the woods with them. Dad use to let us take the week off from school to join them starting at like 10 years old. Its never mattered to me what weapon someone uses as long as its legal. Im a hunter weather its bow gun crossbow or rifle ill use them all if need be.

It’s about tradition and memories. It’s where all the best swimmers get together and act like equals. Guys are truly excited and happy for the guy next to them. Sadly, this year it just isn’t in the cards for us. Maybe ML season we will have a deer camp.

I don’t hold anything against anyone with their choice of weapon. As long as they make a humane kill. Heck If somone can do it with a rock. I’m good with that.

There’s no doubt for me gun season is way funner than bow season.I wasn’t aiming or meaning to seem like I look down on anyone for the weapons they choose to use or like a little better to hunt with. (Or have more luck with)

We all have our preferences. I’m not beyond using any weapon available that is legal to hunt with.

It all comes down to making a good shot and having fun. If your not doing that ya should hang it up.

Wrong crowd buddy, no need to apologize. Some get it, some don’t. To me it has nothing to do with the gun, it’s deer camp. We do the same thing as a group at Strouds every fall. Anyone who attends that, gets it. That’s what it’s all about to me, nothing to do with the gun, it’s a bout the group and the memories made as a group.

Friends/family, everyone at camp is A-hole. Hey A-hole grab me a beer, hey A-hole you about don’t cooking yet, hey A-hole tell that story about you missing again, hey Dustin let’s see those bass pics again...

Honestly I like to bow hunt. But truthfully I would give that up if it came between bow hunting or gun season.

The camaraderie, the laughs and the memories made during gun season. There’s nothing like it. Turkey priceless.
Anyhow that’s not what this thread is about. Let’s hear some stories.

So do I, just tried to not throw down the F-bomb 10 times. Those that have shared the campfire with me read the right word, promise. 😂

Deer camps are a double edged sword. My buddy bought a place in Ohio and the group is small. The plus side is commradery and story telling, practical jokes, etc. I was a member of a large hunting club in NJ but dropped out several years ago because it became more of a social club then a hunting club. I was a member since 1989 and dropped out in 2008. When we would have work parties, the same 6-8 guys would show up. We needed to cut fire wood, cut lines in the woods for drives, place stands on the lines to get the shooters up off of the ground, etc. I would use my linemen’s belt and drive galvanized spikes into the trees then move onto the next tree, while someone would come behind me and place a lock on stand. It was a lot of work. Our club had about 60 members plus guest hunters, yet only a small group would show up for the work parties. Then when we would do drives, when someone would get a deer, they would quit hunting and stay at the camp drinking and playing cards. It wasn’t fair to the other hunters because we would loose a driver....the same driver that the club helped to get his deer. The old timers used to call me a “tree hugger” because I got tired of deer drives and would spend my time sitting in a tree from sun up to sunset. We did have a tradition of prime rib dinner on Thursday nite followed by a couple of girls coming in to “dance”. Some of those nights got pretty crazy. I still stop in one night during the season to visit friends, but have no regrets about dropping out. I had more fun hunting with a group when we were younger and basecamp was my buddies garage. Small group of about ten guys and we always put deer on the ground. I guess what I’m saying is that the friendships and commradery is what deer camp is all about, but I much prefer the smaller groups. When you get 60+ people in a camp, it seems like there is way too much drama, which is what we are trying to get away from while we are hunting with friends.

We also through in 5 on the biggest doe. 10 on the biggest buck. It really is a whiskey fund for Friday night along with bragging rights.

Gotta have camp minutes as well. We keep a notebook and pen laying around guys write what ever they want when they want in it. Sorta what’s going on being said.

Its always a blast to go back through the years and read what happened what bets were made.

I don't know what my favorite is. Satisfying to shoot them with my bow. I get my own sense of fun/satisfaction out of gun hunting. Feels good walking thru the woods with a gun in my hands.

Carried my Remington 870 plenty of times. In recent years I've thoroughly enjoyed carrying the Savage 220. Had a love/hate relationship with the muzzle loader. If I never used it again? I think I'd be okay with that. One of these days I'll tote a lever action Henry 44mag. Not this year.

We would have a big buck contest also....Based on antler score. $20 per person....60+ members...the pot would get pretty big! I’d have to say that I do miss the nightly card games. Our club was incorporated, has officers that were voted on every year.

The most fun part before the week starts is every saturday before gun week my parents throw a party and its been named the deer party since the 80s. We all sit around drink a bunch. Eat good food and play cards. Usually someone gets there face painted when they pass out and someone is usaully puking over the porch. Gun hunting and hunting in itself is starting to be a dieing breed. Its changed alot since i started.

That sounds more like a party. I couldn’t imagine what it would be
Like going to the woods with 60 people.

If people went on a deer drive and got one then didn’t want to drive in return. That’s a big hell no.

Everyone here knows you get a deer. After that if some one hasn’t got one your driving.

I guess tho that’s why small camps are better. Someone’s not pulling their weight in a smaller camp. Others are more prone to see it as well and the situation gets resolved much faster. But I can see what your saying SGT .

I think the bigger a camp gets the more political it becomes. When things become political things go to shit. IMHO

We do the officer thing as well. President Vice President etc. makes things nice. Can put ideas to a vote etc.

Speaking of prime rib that’s what I’m gonna be making for my dinner. We all do a breakfast lunch and a dinner.

This will be my first attempt doing prime rib. (My favorite food) Usally I do porter house steaks every year. Figured I would switch it up this year. Cousin will be doing steaks.

I look forward to this time of the year.
There are 6 of us that have been hunting this week together for almost 20 years. They have been doing it longer than that. I am the new guy.

We only hunt the first 3 days due to work and family but it is a great time. No pressure just go out and sit and wait. We celebrate each other's success and bust balls on the misses. Each evening we grill a bunch of food play cards drink some beer and catch up.

Several of us have brought our kids as they get older enough and we always do everything to make sure the kids get opportunities to shoot. The best celebrations are always when the youth are successful.

Can't wait until Sunday at noon for us to all meet up and head to camp.

That sounds like the “good old days” that I miss! Hopefully I can enjoy that again with my buddies camp in Ohio. IMHO small groups are much better as far as making memories and enjoying the hunt.

Everything is so broke up now adays it's not like gun season of 20 years ago . And with trail cameras many people know what deer are on their property and they don't want to push em to neighbors so noone really drives like back in the day . Which i Is fine by me . I know alot of people perform drives safely and ethically but some of the worst things I've seen ethically and legally occured during drives while I was growing up .
I don't even really gun hunt anymore. Normally I don't have a buck tag by gun and I don't want to shoot a doe .

Good luck to those who venture out and hopefully you all have a safe and successful gin season .
