Hand Held GPS...

So what's a good hand held GPS unit for locating spots and backtracking to your vehicle... I've never been lost in the woods, but it would be nice to be a little precise in finding a new spot or comming out a mile done the road from your vehicle..

I haven’t used a handheld GPS per say, but wouldn’t your phone with the onyx app be about the same? Used in conjunction with google earth?

Garmin is what we use. It will keep you on the trail within 7-9’. HuntStand and onx will get you close but nothing like a real gps unit. Why not use both?

J... Today's cell service sucks... I'd never trust them... Alot of the areas I hunt here in Jersey I cannot put out a cell camera or even use my cell phone.. NO SERVICE.. I've never had a problem finding my way around in the woods, but my son keeps bugging me: What do you want for Xmas... So thought why not put the compass away and go with today's generation of navigating...

Fletch my wife and do wilderness canoe trips I have owned many hand held GPS units
Mostly Garmin
Our trip last year I used my phone cell service is not required you down load the maps you want and then you run off satellite. Very easy and the phone screen is much larger than any hand held
I also now use it on hunting trips as well I think the software is much more user friendly
I have downloaded maps and operated off satellite many times now and I like it much better than a hand held. I carry a battery to charge the phone. On airplane mode the battery last a couple days and my battery for recharging is good for 4 recharges

You don’t always need cell service with OnX. When I know I’m going on a trip, I download an area I designate onto my phone… then I can use OnX when I’m on airplane mode. The GPS receiver doesn’t require cell service to be operative.

Me personally, I prefer to use my phone with OnX when I’m hunting. But I do use a handheld GPS when I’m icefishing, mainly because the battery lasts longer in the frigid cold temperatures. I’ve got a Garmin GPSMAP 64 if I remember correctly. Very pleased with it.

I think Garmin has one that you can buy a satellite data package for texting communication when there is no cell service

I think I have the 64 csx. Might be a new model out but you don’t have to have the newest model to have a great unit. There is also the touch screens such as a Montana. The touch screens are very nice but cost more. Also have a bigger screen to look at. Learning to use it can be frustrating, best to get w someone who has one because all models and brands have a learning curve. I probably use 10% of the functions on mine. Look up gps store for models and reviews. I’d definitely stick w garmin

Stay away from the etrex. Of course you can spend as much as you want. The in reach models you can text and share your coordinates by text.

You can purchase birdeye view for any one of them. This gives you a google overlay on your screen. Also there is free downloads for your device. Gpsfiledepot. Com

Nick... Thanks for the info... I was leaning towards Garmin... Just need something simple, don't need all the bells and whistles I'll never use...
