home pistol question

My personal opinion would be a revolver. The only reason I say that is if you never been trained over and over and then it comes to the actual defense 99%of people will forget to rack around.
Why wouldn't you keep a round chambered?
Remember the criminal chooses when to attack, we are already at a disadvantage with reaction vs action so why give them any further advantage with an empty chamber?

All bullshit aside... If I hear intruders in my house at 3 AM. and I can exit the house with my dog without confronting them.... I will do exactly that, and let the police deal with them...

Revolver is always my first grab . Just natural to my hand and out of luck i shoot them fairly well. When it comes to distance of course any full frame semi pistol I can shoot very well to 50 yards but in the house my revolver is by my side. It will get me plenty close to my next grab which depending on the situation is either a shotgun or an AR. The wifes pistol is also within reach. If the threat is still heavy I'm slinging buckshot. They are strategically placed to where I know which way they're safe to let rip . I don't care about the shape of my house when I'm done only the safety of my family which like I said strategically placed. The AR is for when the initial threat seems to be at bay for the short few seconds and I have the time and advantage of using it close and far if needed. It all comes down to personal preference honestly and what you're comfortable with and which you can put the rounds down range the fastest and safest.

In 90 percent of people's eyes I'm over prepared and geeked out. I spend alot of time thinking about the ifs and what ifs because there is simply no time after the fact to be asking those questions when you're talking about the safety of yourself and your family. My setup is actually quite simple but very effective should anyone ever want to test it. Maybe it was the time overseas that does it to me or maybe it's because I just simply can't trust anyone anymore these days and if I hear a bump in the night my family will be my only thought no matter whos at that door . I'll die on that statement. Cheers fellas!

Not going to argue with that but 90% of people will not have one racked due to what they have been told and taught with gun safety
So you'll keep a loaded chamber with a revolver but not a semi auto? Because of what they've been told and taught?

How is that safer?.....(it's not)

My opinion is that you should have what you are most comfortable with. A little 10-22 that my wife and kids have shot thousands of rounds with is a muscle memory that can't be beat in a situation. So whatever you choose, that weapon should be one that gets used very often. It should always be available and everyone should be very confident with it. Let it be for protecting chickens, dogs, family and just for fun. One gun for every purpose. In my house it is 10-22 and one can be found in almost every room. Size does mot matter over a well placed shot. Well placed shots come from practice. Shooting dandelions stems is fun and very inexpensive. But what I'm really doing is building a natural defense in my kids. They can clear a jamb or any other issue fast and be accurate again. Those are the things that make a difference when in a situation. So, when they see a "critter in the chicken coop" they don't go searching for what gun to use or think about what to do. It is all instincts at this point. Shit happens and it is usually a single shot fired to neutralize the situation. IF anyone ever decided to enter my house I KNOW what each and every one of them would grab. I am 100% confident in what they know and they don't even know why they know it. Lol. Consistency counts.

I guess I say all that to say, if you are set on a pistol, I wouldn't limit yourself by caliber. I don't know the numbers, but I'd think the 22 is one of the most deadly rounds. It kills all sorts of game every year. I used to have a few Walther P22s and that is what my wife carried for years.

22LR is a very versatile caliber but it has a large limitation in being rimfire. Unless you're spending $$ on ammo it's a little finicky imo.

Similar in recoil but more powerful and more reliable in not being rimfire is 22mag. The keltec pmr is a great option as 30 rounds of 22 mag isn't anything to ignore. It's on my list of pistols to pick up eventually.
