Deer Hunts 2024

Oct. 9 WNW wind 62*

Got on stand at 3:00. I spooked what looked to be a small deer just across the creek when I went to park the tractor. Had to make a run to the blue building (Porta-Jon) at 5:00. Settled back in at 5:13 hope it didn’t ruin the evening hunt. At about 5:40 a doe and fawn came from the north catching me off guard. Both were right in front of me when I noticed them. The doe had me busted. She stomped and snorted a bit and then left going up past the big rock. Jeff saw nothing.

Oct 10 40* no wind

Got on stand just after daylight hunted until About 9:20 a small 4pt came from the north he nudged my vine and headed south . When he got to the tractor crossing he held up and kept smelling the ground. He then turned around and walked in front of me acting skittish then headed up the trail towards the big rock. Jeff saw a 6pt and a couple does.

Back in at 3:45 about 55*very light wind. I saw nothing. Jeff saw a doe and a couple yearlings.

October 16 Slightly breezy NNW 54*

Got settled in about 3:30. I saw nothing. Jeff saw the doe and her two fawns.

Oct 17 calm 35-40*

Used the light on the tractor going in this morning. Sun got to bottom at about 8:30, no movement yet. Had a 4pt come from the north at about 8:45. He was moving quickly, but did stop and take a quick look at my stand. He went past the creek crossing and then went in to and followed it about halfway to the bridge then jumped up the bank and went south. A small spike came from the north at 9:15 in no hurry. He went right to the vine and rubbed it. He then went to rubbing on my little beech tree. He then went south and used the normal fence crossing. Jeff saw a doe with a bad leg and her fawn at 9:00. They came from the back of the field all the way past his stand and went down the tractor path towards the outhouse stand.

Back on stand at 3:30 about 50* or so very little WNW wind. Saw nothing.

Oct 27 Calm around 55-60*

Got settled in at 3:45

Hunted til dark and saw nothing.

Oct 28 Calm around 30-35*

Got on stand right at daylight

Sat til 10:30 nothing showed up this morning. Jeff saw a 6pt chasing a doe at 9:30.

Back in at 3:35 light NNW wind about 60*. Neither of us saw any deer.

Nov 1 56* WNW 8-12 with gusts

Settled in at 3:20

Had a small doe come in from the north possibly down the trail from the big rock. Took her 15 minutes to go from the grapevine to the fence crossing. Not spooked, just munched leaves along the way. At 5:20 a 4 or 5 point came from the south worked the vine a little and went towards the north . At about 5:40 the deer we call Whiteface came from the south by the old bridge. He was a 9 point but he broken off his other G4 and looks like both brows. A huge mature buck that hung around for 10 minutes in shooting range. Was a tough decision that I may regret later, but I decided to let him walk. What a cool encounter. Hoping for a shot at the 10 point I’ve watched grow all summer.

Good luck with him Dick.👍🏻

Got in late last night. Had a few days of stand time. Nice to enjoy the fall days.

Nov 6 mid 60s SSE 10+ cloudy

Settled in at 1:30 very calm in the creek bottom. An afternoon where the woods seemed to be devoid of life. Neither Jeff or I saw very little in the way of creatures of any kind.

Nov. 7 mid 40s damp and very calm

Settled in before shooting light. Hopefully a better hunt this morning.

I saw nothing, Jeff saw single doe at 8:30.

Back in stand at 2:00 full sun around the mid 50s or so. I saw nothing Jeff saw a half rack buck at 5:00.

Nov. 8 Around the mid 30s calm with a pretty good amount of fog.

Settled in before first light. Sun came up big and bright. Fog was gone by 7:30. Finally I see a deer. Hard to see him in my crappy cell phone photo. A four point came from the south and worked a licking branch near the fence crossing. He then worked his way to my vine and rubbed on it for about 30 seconds or so. I did take a couple quick photos while he was working the vine. He then headed up the tractor path towards the big rock. Jeff saw nothing this morning.

Back on stand at 1:15. Windy and variable. Sunny and warm. When we went in for lunch Jeff saw a giant buck just across the road from the cabin. Hunted until dark, neither of us saw anything.

Here are a few photos of Whiteface as he was within 20 yards of me om Nov.1. Definately a mature buck. He does still have his brow tines, how I didn't see them that evening is beyond me. He is now an 8 pt with the two G4's broken off.

Nov 12 48* Sunny NNE @ 5-8

We were both settled in at 1:50. Neither of us saw anything.

Nov 13 Cold and frosty this morning around freezing. Light NNE wind. Sun is just about to enter the creek bottom at 8:02. I saw nothing. Jeff saw the tall 6 at 10:00.

Back on stand at 2:00. Mostly cloudy this afternoon with a light NE wind. Jeff saw a yearling and I had no action again.

Nov 18 mid 50’s - 60* Quite calm

I moved my stand a few inches to give me a better view to the north. Settled in at 12:35. I saw nothing, Jeff saw a small doe at 2:30. She came from the south all alone.

Nov 19 Low 40’s Light wind variable. Looks like rain will be coming today. Light rain arrived at 8:20 maybe this will get something moving. No such luck. Neither of us saw any deer.

Settled back in at 2:00 SSE wind very cloudy probably more rain coming. My stomach was upset and I was only able to sit until 4:00. Jeff saw two bucks chasing a doe at about 2:30. Looked like a spike and a tall narrow 8 point.

Nov 20 Around 50* with heavy fog no wind. Fog lifted by 8:00 and the sun came out. I’m beginning to wonder why no deer are using the creek bottom as a travel corridor. Neither of us saw deer this morning.

Back in stand at 2:00 light west wind quite warm. Started raining about 2:15. At 3:22 a cold front came through with some high winds And a big temperature drop. Not the best weather for deer movement. Neither of us saw any deer. My camera showed a steep drop in deer activity over the last week. Typical after the youth season.

Nov 25 40* Wind S @ 5mph

On stand at 12:30. Jeff came by at 1:40 heading to his stand. Jeff jumped about ten deer on his way in. They all headed west. Neither of us saw a deer from our stands.

Nov 26 40* WNW 12-18

Got in just before shooting light. Neither of us saw anything.

Back on stand a little before 2:00. Most likely my last hunt of the season. Lots of questions as to why the deer didn’t use the creek bottom, as much as in the past, for traveling this year. Could be just a fluke. I’ll have to see if something has changed on the two properties that connect to mine in the creek bottom. I will hang my scrape dripper again next November. If by chance the cameras show some up tick in movement I may hunt a couple times before we head to South Carolina for the winter.

Hope everyone has a great and safe remainder of the season.
