As Far as scopes breaking, the only one lost was a Swift pistol scope on a Super Redhawk 44. the rear lens turned into a spider web with numerous crack lines but no glass flew. I sent it back and got free replacement. I have hear that Swift made all the Thompson Center scopes of which I have several and only one had a strange size battery die for the lighted reticle. T/C sent me a brand new scope with easily replaceable batteries.
As for the shotgun versus rifle scope, be carefull about what your buying. Shotgun scopes tend to have longer eye relief to keep you from splitting the skin on your eyebrow. shotgun scopes are not necessarily tougher to break.
