Socked in, fog vary heavy this morning. No birds yet but did have 4 does cross the edge of pond with a small buck grunting and following a minute later. Then 10 minutes later another do and 15 minutes after another 2 yr old buck crossed.

Well my long stint at the camp is over, need to go to work in the morning. Dj bow hunting the refuge and me and Hunter hit a new spot for wood ducks. Ended up one shy of the limit, killing 5.

Came back to the camp Friday night, I must say work sucks and I’m happy with my decision to retire. With that being said my buddy Lee want to go hunt off the main river for mallards, he had his kids and I said why not. Woke up at 3:30 am after going to bed around 12 that night. Hunter had duck breast, gizzard and heart gravy…..he out did himself. Made it to the oxbow and things were slow. We ended up killing a greenhead, 3 wood ducks and a ring neck. On the way out we had 3 does swimming, stop to take a pic and short video and headed to the launch. Got back and took pics with this mornings ducks and his ducks from the day before.
This morning dj and myself went to a duck hole, Hunter and two friends hit another spot. We all ended up w 2 shy of a limit combined. Plan is to Hittem up in the morning again to celebrate MLK day in style.

We headed home now.
Probably gonna hunt down in Venice next weekend. Got to get my bull sprig and can fix! I will check in and let y’all know.
Shit after this week I can take vacation the rest of the month. Either use it or get paid for it. I can make more money but I can’t make memories if I don’t do it. Guess what I’m gonna do?

So this past weekend I hunted w a friend/coworker duck hunting. We killed 4 each day but found the birds sunday. The plan was to hunt today, I took off work and Barry, Dj, Hunter and I made a hunt. We ended up w 17 and we shot like shit.
I took off the rest of the week. Me and Hunter and Pearl of course going to get them in the morning. Then we rolling out to Venice.

Of course I’m not working weekends nor Mardi Gras day. Haven’t counted how many “work” days. Ok I just counted
20 days left. Taking off the next two days and Monday before Mardi Gras which is Tuesday.

We we ain’t wearing them out but having some decent hunts. 5 gadwalls, 1 wigeon and a greenwing teal.
we are gathering gear and supplies to head to Venice early in the morning. Get there for daybreak and ride down river in the big muddy in the daylight. I don’t know what kind of service we will have but I am sure it will be an epic trip. Maybe I will finally get my bull sprig w jewelry. That’s my number one bucket list!

Y’all ready for this report? Here goes. Left the house around 4:30 am and arriving at 7. Launched our two boats and loaded up. Cody and gf Taylor went down the day before. Arrived 25 miles south of Venice to a primitive camp site. Basically a high spot that’s kind of maintained but has a couple fire rings w flip over grills and bbq pits. Also had 3 picnic tables. We unloaded boats and arranged our gear, and set up the tent. Got ready and went scouted a few areas. Few birds here and there but the tide was out and some areas was almost dry. Texted Hunter and he asked if we found anything. I said I found a spot that had some birds and he said I found thousands and thousands. He sent me a pin and I said we were gonna hunt here. So it was Taylor, myself, layne and Brad. Couldn’t paddle into the pond/bay so we walked out and threw decoys out. Pushed the pirogues in the canes. Then the birds started to come in. We killed our limit of 24 birds, consisting of a mallard, pair of mottled ducks, gadwalls, blue and green wing teal, pintail and a couple of ring necks and spoonbills. Hunter and Cody were back at the camp an hour before sunset w a limit of canvasbacks, pintail, with the rest being gadwalls and a teal.
The next morning Taylor opted out and we all went to a new area. Me, layne and Brad hunted with the tide being way out. We was off the mark by 350 yards but managed to kill 11 ducks.

Swapped the trailer to a buddy that drove down to hunt w us and got back to the camp. We all went out in 2 boats to find some birds. Drove all over and didn’t see shit. It’s 4 something now so I told Hunter where I want to hunt and we headed out. Canvasbacks were flying over in groups and we quickly setup without must to hide behind. Hunter, Ronnie and myself killed pintail and canvasbacks and a few other birds. Retrieves were difficult and Pearl was killing it. We didn’t take pics of the evening hunt and Cody and Taylor killed a gadwall.
The next morning we were gonna all hunt together as we watched the flight patterns and set up a lot better than the evening. We were in a big cane patch on a giant bay. Day broke and we had cans flying over and and around us but none decoying. We managed to shoot a few passing. Canvasbacks, pintails, gadwalls and killed a single teal. We ended up killing 22 I think, limiting out on pintails and 4 short on cans, the rest were gadwalls and a teal. I must say Pearl got a workout as most ducks were far out up to 200 yards away and big blind retrieves. But as expected she killed it, only one wounded bird getting away out like 180 yards away as it flew off as Pearl got close. Epic weekend and closure.

Pearl was wore out, fetching 60 out of the 78 birds killed. The other ones they hunted without us and we was at a different spot.

Well I’d like to thank everyone for following my hunts and journeys this year. I must say it’s enjoyable to share my adventures with you all and even enjoy your reactions and comments.
I will be a free man soon and ready to burn it up in the outdoors. I might train a few dogs for the boys friends, they need help. Other than that, coming up is crawfish season, Turkey season, catching some frogs, snapping turtles, bass, speckled trout, redfish, tripletails, flounder and maybe some red snapper.
Earlier this year there was a thread for this seasons goals. I wanted to kill a good buck, put Pearl on a bunch of ducks and make memories with family and friends. I think I knocked it out the park. Killed two good bucks, two doe, and a few sacks of ducks. Caught some catfish and frogs. I’ve been blessed. Again thanks for following.
