Ok here’s the down and dirty lol.
It’s been a frustrating season to say the least. Dj did kill a good buck and made it all worth it.
So I was frustrated last night as I can’t get things to go right and didn’t see any deer just bears. Got up this morning, it was supposed to be real foggy so I’d figure to hunt some ducks. Woke up and stars were out, 40 degrees and no wind. Told dj we going deer hunting. Arrive at the property, spots of hanging fog on the way. We did the walk in, paddle and walk to stands. I got to my stand and we bumped fist but didn’t say good luck. Before shooting time I could see 100 yards on the lane. Heard the neighboring property’s driving atv. Right at shooting time a rifle shot went off, 5 minutes later another, then 10 minutes later another. Damn I’m sitting here looking at empty lanes. Texted neighbors and they said they didn’t shoot. Had to be field hands hunting on bean field that borders me.
Fog was rolling in as it was a thin layer off the ground and you could look over it and see trees.
At 7:30 I said what the hell and pulled my bleat can out my bag and held it out the window. Rolled it once, paused and again. 20 seconds later I did again. Brought my hand out the window and turned to look at lane that’s 180 degrees. There stood the buck, in the light fog not 70 yards away. He had me pegged as he was a body length out from grass and broadside. As I’m sizing him up, he’s staring at me. I’m not moving, not even blinking. He looks like a 2 year old w 14” spread. Thin horns but I couldn’t really tell. Finally he looks straight and I pull my Binos up and think him he’s at least 3 w good mass. Reach for my rifle and he’s walking across. I bleat as I’m trying to find him in scope and he stops. Quartering to me so I aim front of shoulder hitting the back shoulder on exit. Pulled the trigger, he bucks and runs off. Damn that happened fast. 12 minutes pass as I texted a bunch of peeps and they screaming for pics. I get down and look for blood.... no blood. Ok found tracks and start in the thick stuff. Tracks were no where once I was in so I backed out some, then I could smell him took a different trail and seen horns sticking up. Drug him out a yard at a time backwards until I made the 40 yard pull out on the lane. I told dj im going for the cart and to hunt. Walked the 1000 yard walk back to the boat and pulled it back. Climbed back in and sat there letting dj hunt. At 9 I asked him if he was ready, so he got down and walked to me. We bumped fist and he told me congrats. Took pictures and loaded him up. We pulled the cart about 200 yards and my calves were burning. Told him to stop cause this ain’t a race. Finally made it to boat and paddled across. Was met by two friends and they pulled the rest of the way to the truck. The rest is history.
No monster by the stretch of the tape, but priceless memories were made. Buck scored 120” and 222#.
Thanks for following, it’s been fun sharing my hunts with y’all.
