Yesterday started at 3am at the ramp for a 98 mile run offshore to fish for tuna. It was 36 when we left the ramp in an open center console in the dark for a 2.5 hour sprint at 40mph. We got to the grounds and within the first two hours had two blackfin on the boat. We trolled around rigs and mounds for another 100mi and only managed some non-targets like Jack Crevelle, and a bunch of Bonita. We stopped trolling and started chunking which is basically free lining a chunk of cut bait without a weight and throwing a couple handfuls of chucked bait in at the same time. The idea being they'll all drift relatively together and the tuna will come up to feed. That produced a couple of good runs of tuna but every damn one of them got sharked during the fight. I cut half a Bonita on a big hook and threw it back in. The tax man was going to pay. After an hour and 5 wore out fishermen later he finally broke the surface and caught a hot one in the head. My neighbor the boat owner is an avid offshore spearfisheman that dives rigs and for him to say "Holy Shit that's a big ass bull shark" means something.
we measured him against the gaf pole and he was a little over 8 feet, we guess around 300lbs. Right before he broke the surface we saw he had a big cobia tailing him and a guy threw a jig and hooked him so we had a big cobia and a bull shark on the line.
All in all it was a cold day but we had great seas, tight lines, and tuna on the boat. We hit the ramp at 6:30pm with everyone wore out. We ran a little over 297 miles total and got to see both a sunrise and sunset over the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
