Live From the Stand 2017.

Rough morning. Locked my keys in my car two hours from home. Got to the stand soaking wet. Trail cam hasnt taken a pic in a week. But had a unicorn work a scrape 40 yards behind me just as i got settled in.

Wife got her first deer Saturday. After 7 years of holding out for a mature buck and lots of bad luck, I finally got her to cave and take a doe. Out for a 4.5 year old now she says. Great day. Absolutely smoked her double lung.

Just had a 2.5 year old 8 come through. He was cruising, not nose to the ground but slowly ambling along smelling. I'm sitting in a strip of timber 100 yards wide by 3/4 mile long. To the east is a half mile of crp thats flooded with 3-6 inches of water. And to the west a corn field they cut Saturday. That creates a hell of a dry land pinch im sitting in.

Just had a small 6 pt come through and he was on a coyote paced trot.

Been settled in since 6:15. New stand location I have never sat in so not sure what the day will bring. Good luck to all that are out. Rain has moved on out here.
 
Congrats to your wife on the doe! Nice shot too [emoji106] 7 years is a long time to wait to shoot your first deer but hey more power to her. Rains really coming down here now. If it starts to lighten up I’m gonna head in. Radar says it’s only gonna get worse.
 
Been settled in since 630ish. Stopped to scan open field with binoculars in the dark. Watched a couple tails flagging away at 300yds. Hard to believe they saw me. I hope not. Did have a 1.5yr old buck stroll thru nice and easy. Sort of read the script. Stayed out at 40-50yds. Threw his nose up for a bit. Hopefully for the Docs scent I had on a scent wick and not for me. I just washed all this gear and freshly smoked it this morning. He didn't act alarmed at all but he was a young dumb buck.

At first light I heard a horrendous splash it the fast flowing creek. Had to be a deer. I see no trees down and nine floated down stream my way. Never showed itself. I did throw out a couple turns of the can call to no avail.

I love these weather changes...particularly for this week. Only prob is lots of ne or ene winds predicted for this week. Just don’t have the setup or land for those winds.
 
Seen 7 bucks so far. Dinks to probably a 130 8 pt. The 8 was borderline Had two young bucks maybe 100 inch each 40 yards down wind for 15 min. That 8 strolled in and got hinky. He blew a couple times and bounded back to about 80 yards. I grunted and calmed him down. He fed around for a while about 120 yards away and slipped off in the woods. Came back out and just moseyed on. He must not have liked smoke because i know he didn't smell me or he would have hightailed it out of here. First rime I've ever seen a deer do that to smoke.

Good luck All! So far it's been dead for me. 1 coon, 1 squirrel, 2 yotes. I think the yotes killed the coon. There was about 30 seconds of a god awful sounding scuffle then silence.
