Sorry it worked out the way it did, but regardless he is a banger of a buck and you killed him. As others have said, gotta be very bittersweet.

Wow bittersweet moment for sure. It sucks for sure on the hide and meat and all but like others have said at least you found him and can put the worry to rest. My best buck I ever shot was a very similar experience so I feel your pain. Your taxidermist can find a cape if that's the route you take. That's what I did and I don't regret doing it at all.
