Congrats again bud. It really is something to be proud of. A senor test is no walk in the park... That's a great accomplishment for any dog, especially one that's only 11 months old! I'll give you a call after work to get the details.

Started swim-by today.... its the best pond I have available to do it in. Its about 20 yards across and 60 yards long. We established the pile across the 20 yard section. Then we started the actual swim-by. It took about 10 repetitions before he would cast off the far end of the pond and swim parallel to me and swim to the other end without multiple reminders to keep swimming to other end. All in all it was a great first day of swim by. I figure about a weeks worth of doing this and he should have a pretty good grasp on the concept. What he did today was promising. So hopefully in a week we will have it licked. Once we are done I am going to do a baseball style drill with a bumper in each corner... one on the sides in the middle and one on the far end in the middle.... this should also help with water casting.

I will say its a odd feeling watching your dog swim past you with a bumper in his mouth.... which is what makes it somewhat confusing for the dog. Everything they have been taught is to bring the bumper directly back to you.... and with this drill.... you are asking them to basicly get a bumper and swim by you and away from you.

Just catching up with your thread! Awesome and congratulations to you both!

I fully understand how frustrating and uneasy you both must feel doing the swim by test after everything all the other training you've both already done. Must be very confusing for Ace and stressful for you!

This is a very interesting and enlightening thread. Keep up the good work!

Good deal man. Swim by is a very crucial part of training s good handling retriever. Sounds like you're taking your time with it and that's good. A week or so should be plenty. That "light bulb" will turn on in Ace's mind and you'll have a totally different dog on your hands. There are so many things you can teach and challenge the dog with once swimby is complete. Keep up the good work dude.

I've been super busy the last couple weeks and Betty's training has slacked because of it. We set up a couple test scenarios tonight with the wingers and it went decent but I can tell her marking was slipping a bit. Her blind running and handling remained stellar though so I'm not worried. Marking is pretty easy to polish up.

Well I took the whole family to NY this weekend for a hunt test with Ace... It was long and hot..... Saturday proved to be a pretty difficult test.... Ace was 1 of only 6 dogs to complete the test...... Which makes me very proud.... Sunday was quite a bit easier, ace breezed through it with no issues.,... Now we only need one more pass to get his SH title.... I am hoping to run him Aug 8 for his title in Pa.... I have to be able to get off work first.,...

Dang Zach! Congrats to Ace! You going to dabble into FT once he gets his MH? And have you done any HRC tests? I remember you saying you were thinking about doing both.

I am seriously thinking about running some derbys next spring....Maybe some day we will do a field trial or two... Just so I can say we played the game.... But at this point I am only concerned about getting his last SH pass and then focusing on MH...... Its going to be a tough task.....but I think with enough work we can accomplish it.... The dog has the drive and ability.... At least I think... I just need to up my game and become a better trainer... We have some small issues we need to sort through....

I wont run any HRC tests until hes ready for MH... and I will go right into running finished tests.... At that point he will have to complete 5 finished tests to get his HRCH... I am hoping to finish his HRCH finished title in Tennessee at the breeders HRC test.... But thats a 13 Hr drive.....so we will see how it all plays out

Well today wlqe headed to the Presque isle retriever club to get aces last SH pass for his title. We started out with 25 dogs.... the land set was a breeze... but we lost 6 dogs on it. The water was a different story. It was hands down one of the hardest blinds I've ever ran with ace in water.... it was about 90 yards and there was a point halfway that was 10 feet from the line to the bird. It was a rough one, but ace got it. Only 8 dogs made it through water....

So today ace received his SH title at a young 12 months old.... he is now 8 for 8 in hunt tests.... I couldnt be more proud.... So now it's back to the drawing board and nose to the grindstone. I hope to run our first MH test next april or may.... we will see how he progresses. We have a lot to improve on and learn before we stick our nose in master.

Apparently new app won't let me post pictures

Congrats man. That's a nice hurdle to get over. By the sounds of it, Master will be more like a mountain. Lol.
