Needs another year

75% of people that say "he needs another year" will kill him this year. Some bucks show great growth each year. Others show nothing. It's a guessing game for sure.

2016-2017....great growth



2014-2017...very little growth

Yep. Usually that trigger was horns. Very seldom that anyone talked about letting one grow for another year as well.

This was a cool one because we were able to ID him when he was only a year old due to his torn ear. Called him 'Holyfield'. He was core to the farm and lit the cams up every year but was pretty much a ghost. I shot under him at 20yds when he was 5, then the landowner popped him late muzzy when he was 6. Had his best antlers when he was 5 (found the sheds, upper 60s). Was 156 when he was 6.

Maybe I should state the obvious as well. The more this "needs another year" line is used, it has been taken out of context. Some of the time when I say it, it simply means I wouldn't shoot him this year but I am hoping he makes the jump next year. Iowabuckeye is in a unique position. I have had a deer here or there I have been able to capture on trail camera for multiple years. It really hasn't happened too often though. With small wood lots in NW Ohio along with crop rotations, I don't often get bucks that hang out on the same small patch year after year after year. Maybe if I had access to more continuous acres I would. The more I think about this, for me it means "I wouldn't shoot him this year" more than anything else.

In almost all of these pics, you can see the deer that have the "IT" factor at a young age. Not all deer do, and some make an impressive jump that surprises us. Every deer is different. Take for example this guy I got on camera last year as what I believe was a 2.5 yr old. I liked the uniqueness of his rack but didn't think he would grow much from 2 to 3. I was pleasantly surprised this year as he put on mass and main beam length. I actually grunted him in from 150 yds this year for him only to hang up at 50 yds and present no shot. I hope he makes it thru this year as it will be exciting to see the growth next year. Those high and tights make me all warm inside, lol

I am not trying to start a spin off conversation to this topic, first because this is a great thread (llove all the pictures of the growth of these deer) and second because there is no real solution to the argument. But I think like especially on facebook hunting groups we starting to see a line in the sand split into factions mentality- "The mature whitetail horn hunters" and the " old skool, if its over a year old its down". I don't think either is wrong, but it is a constant argument on facebook groups when talking conservation strategies, hunting tradition etc, etc. Giles I truly think trail cameras have started the demise of whitetail hunting.
