Good Morning Gents. I am new to this forum. I have lurked for a while and you guys have given great advice that actually helped me get set up on a nice 8 point on public land.

Problem: I shot him I didn't get a pass through it went in one shoulder but didn't come out the other. Blood was good at first and then died down and then picked back up and so on and so forth. I tracked him and he went on to private land that I didn't know was private until I hit a homemade tree stand so I backed out found the info and it lists 2 numbers I called both with no answer just rang and rang. I called 3 or 4 times both numbers. But it also says the land owner is a realtor company and the realtor company has been closed for good. So I guess my question is what would your guys next step. This was last night so I'm sure the meat is spoiled but I hate to leave it lay if it did die and let it go to waste. Any ideas fellas? Thanks in advance

I'd call the local GW and/or sheriff and get their take on it. They might be able to help you out possibly after explaining what you have done thus far.

Other than that, I really wouldn't know what else to do in your situation.

Good luck to you!

BTW, welcome to the forum 'TOO'!

Thank you very much I will give that a try. I just don't want them to feel like I was intentionally trespassing. As soon as I seen the tree stand I backed out and looked at the map on the ODNR website and realized it was private and tried to find contact info.

It looked like I hit lung it was bright red and bubbly. But I got prolly 6-8 inches from what I could see as he was running. I didn't recover the arrow. I looked for it but couldn't find it. It was with my crossbow.

Hard to say then. If you are confident of the penetration it's possible you hit the opposite shoulder and the deer is dead. If you hit the near shoulder and got into the chest cavity it is also possible you got one lung. The private land is the only thing holding you back from either finding him or writing him off as a survivor. Call the GW and see what he thinks you should do. More than likely he won't tell you go for it but he may come out and possibly go with you.

I wouldn't really call the law on myself and tell then I committed a crime myself. I wouldn't expect them to really do anything at all other than tell you that you legally cannot cross that boundary without the owners owner's permission. Instead of potentially having a bad day by calling the law if their is a residence on this property go there and ask if you want legal permission to retrieve.

How far did you track him when you decided to stop? 50yrds or 200yrds plus?? Blood dark or bright red?

Good luck and welcome aboard!

I tracked him about 300-400 yards. only about 100 yards on to the private before I seen the stand and backed out. Bright red blood

Do you have a record of calls made? If so, although illegal, I’d hop the fence and go find the deer. You tried to do the right thing. Letting a deer lay because he crossed a property line isn’t something I’d do unless expressly told not to go on the land. Call me an outlaw...

Yes sir I sure do every call made. This was my thought too, I hate to see an old mature deer like he is survive this long and die and lay for nothing. Not the way I was raised to hunt
