Nothing about Nothing

Matt I agree that the racist post go too far, I would hate for a black person that wanted to learn more about hunting to join this forum and then run across that crap. I am not a pussy, or easily offended, but I will tell you that it is stupid to post stuff like that, I just scroll on by. I find it funny that people think the south is racist.

Racism is a belief of superiority over another race. That's not what goes on here. Is it insensitive? Yes, most definitely to some. As Chapelle says, that shits funny, but it's no reason to hate a mother fucker. We're lead by an emotional, politically correct society where kids of today can't deal with anything. Matt, it may be prudent to prepare your students for real life instead of hiding them from it.

This is an excellent post, 100% thru and thru. This is what I was trying to convey in my last post, but Mike does it a lot better and quicker.

now to go look at the gunslingers thread and take the edge off...

How do people tell their parents what kind of baby they’re having these days? “I’m not going to assume, so we are just having a baby”

Mike, I agree partially with what you are saying. In most cases I do believe we are turning into a culture of overreaction. For example, people are triggered when someone says they like Trump, and they are equally triggered when someone says they hate him, and that kind of overreaction is ridiculous on both sides. I am also a firm believer in the idea that we must prepare our children for the path, and not prepare the path for our children. Lawnmower parents have replaced the helicopters. But regardless of that, it doesn't mean that we can't be on the watch for things that actually do create a wider gap between groups. You guys are all correct in coming on here with evidence of people like Chapelle poking fun at racism through comedy. But what this site misses is context for the outsider. There is a stark difference between watching a comedian on a special, or going to their show, and seeing things posted here. The comedian can provide context to the scenario.
Perhaps it's that I am blessed (or probably more accurately cursed) with the outsider's perspective. See, you guys have been around each other a long time. I don't know most of the people here, so I lack situational context. I do not believe that things that people like Chappelle or Rogan or others say creates a divide and is offensive. On the contrary, I think that it enables us to think about and laugh about the bad parts of our society and realize how ridiculous those people actually are.
But I go back to my earlier point. If I was to go to a site where the members were almost exclusively (if not entirely) black, (or Mexican, or female, or whatever), and it was about a subject that I was interested in learning more about, and they were regularly posting racially charged memes, then I would not feel welcome, and I would choose somewhere else to find my information. There is a time and place for that type of comedy, and a greater context within which it can and should exist. However, I don't think it can exist in this type of environment without it appearing to an outsider as divisive and discriminatory. I also don't believe that I'm going to change anyone's mind here. It's quite apparent that my view is an unpopular one and that most people now perceive me as just like the rest of the over-triggered reactionary culture we live in. I guess this is a perfect example to the rest of the site about what a lack of contextual understanding can do. I tried to provide that context by giving background information about myself that would hopefully help people understand that this isn't about me somehow being an overly sensitive snowflake. That context is apparently lost to most here. I'm willing to engage the group in this conversation because I do understand the good things this group of people accomplishes. But do you think that new hunter will stick around long enough to discover what those good things are?

I get what you're trying to say Matt. I had a very similar conversation with the owner of another site before TOO was ever created. They would constantly delete and ban members for what they considered not family or child appropriate. His point was the same as yours. The turning away of people wanting to learn. My point to him was he should cater more to the members that he has instead of hypothetical ones who may be turned off by something. He basically told me to fuck off and go start our own site. We did just that and the vast majority of his members left to follow us, now 9 years later our site is 6 times more active than his and we gain new members all the time. This is another reason why we don't really have ads here. We're not going to be censored by advertisers trying to dictate what we can and can't say because of associations. TOO is TOO and always will be, it's a place where people are not constrained by the opinions and feelings of society at large. The model has worked great and we have no issues with it. Censorship based on feelings or perception is never a good thing and is a slippery slope. People can take from the site what they want and scroll past what they don't like but we're not changing a thing because someone somewhere can't understand that this is a site for rough around the edges hunters who kill shit and appreciate all sorts of humor, and not your local optimist club forum.

I think this is the third or fourth time now that I have said this. I would not expect you to censor anything. I even said in the beginning that I didn't know where you and Jesse stood. I know full well what you have tried to accomplish. And you guys have been very successful in accomplishing your mission. I have brought up what I believe to be a valid perspective and point of view, and the majority of the group has dismissed my perspective as triggered reaction, which is inaccurate and unfortunate. I asked a question of everyone else's perspective, and mine is in the minority. My purpose was to discover what lines the group as a whole were willing and unwilling to cross, and I have my answer. This is a hunting and outdoors forum that is member-driven, to be sure, and the forum members are catering to a select group of members and potential members. From this conversation we have had it is apparent to me that there are certain individuals who I personally would not steer to the site as a resource, which was driving my decision to return. I don't honestly believe that anyone here has any racially charged motivations or intentions. I'm simply addressing the outsider's perspective.

Matt, I know where you are coming from and appreciate you stating, and defending, your stance regarding outsider perception. I would reiterate that we did not create this place, nor do we make decisions based upon outsider perspective. We know our niche and we are committed to it irregardless of outsider perspective. I know you're not triggered and you present a well-deserved and valid position. I think we're all clear on each other's stance at this point, so let's not beat a dead horse and get back to memes that some may be offended by...
