Mike, I agree partially with what you are saying. In most cases I do believe we are turning into a culture of overreaction. For example, people are triggered when someone says they like Trump, and they are equally triggered when someone says they hate him, and that kind of overreaction is ridiculous on both sides. I am also a firm believer in the idea that we must prepare our children for the path, and not prepare the path for our children. Lawnmower parents have replaced the helicopters. But regardless of that, it doesn't mean that we can't be on the watch for things that actually do create a wider gap between groups. You guys are all correct in coming on here with evidence of people like Chapelle poking fun at racism through comedy. But what this site misses is context for the outsider. There is a stark difference between watching a comedian on a special, or going to their show, and seeing things posted here. The comedian can provide context to the scenario.
Perhaps it's that I am blessed (or probably more accurately cursed) with the outsider's perspective. See, you guys have been around each other a long time. I don't know most of the people here, so I lack situational context. I do not believe that things that people like Chappelle or Rogan or others say creates a divide and is offensive. On the contrary, I think that it enables us to think about and laugh about the bad parts of our society and realize how ridiculous those people actually are.
But I go back to my earlier point. If I was to go to a site where the members were almost exclusively (if not entirely) black, (or Mexican, or female, or whatever), and it was about a subject that I was interested in learning more about, and they were regularly posting racially charged memes, then I would not feel welcome, and I would choose somewhere else to find my information. There is a time and place for that type of comedy, and a greater context within which it can and should exist. However, I don't think it can exist in this type of environment without it appearing to an outsider as divisive and discriminatory. I also don't believe that I'm going to change anyone's mind here. It's quite apparent that my view is an unpopular one and that most people now perceive me as just like the rest of the over-triggered reactionary culture we live in. I guess this is a perfect example to the rest of the site about what a lack of contextual understanding can do. I tried to provide that context by giving background information about myself that would hopefully help people understand that this isn't about me somehow being an overly sensitive snowflake. That context is apparently lost to most here. I'm willing to engage the group in this conversation because I do understand the good things this group of people accomplishes. But do you think that new hunter will stick around long enough to discover what those good things are?
