Ohio sucks

That drives me absolutely nuts too. I'm getting so tired of everyone being all about the antlers instead of the hunt itself... The experience in general. But I think what annoys me the most are the guys who make up excuses about shooting a certain deer. Snoke did it last year. Now I've already seen it half a dozen times on Facebook this year. Things like, "he's not the biggest but I'm in grad school," or "I've killed bigger but I didn't have as much time to hunt.". Etc etc etc. What the hell ever happened to just being proud of a deer you killed? They obviously want to show it off if it's on FB or Instagram... So then why do they have to try to validate why they shot it, like they're embarrassed about it? That shit really chaps my ass and it's ruining deer hunting.

I've never been disappointed by any deer I've taken, some are better then others but I have had a good time chasing them and during gun season I've had a great time chasing them with a group of guys for the last 4-5 years, good times shared by like minded folks.... It don't get much better then that....

Exactly. That's what it should be about. Enjoying the hunt and the camaraderie.

Did you guys happen to look at the thread about my old man? It was full of just that! The size of that buck had nothing to do with any of it.

Yep, and you're doing it right.... Too much emphasis on antler size measuring success....
some on here are very good at chasing and scoring on great bucks year in and year out.... Mans gotta know his limitations so too speak and mine isn't Boone and crocket lol.... Just don't have the genetics or the land to manage for it....

Pick a side...geez. Have you ever been checked for bi-polar? Lol

I'm competitive. I'm goal oriented. I am harder on myself than anyone. In deer hunting there are many highs and lows. I happen to share them with you guys. Glad I could be of amusement for you. I know you were teasing. Just saying, as hard as I push myself, there are going to be some let downs and moments of frustration. It's the highs and lows of hunting deer that is my drug of choice. For the record, it isn't the antlers for me, it is the challenge I bring on myself. Self inflicted pain because I bring the challenge on myself. I don't care if you or anyone else shoots a bigger buck. I will be happy for you. I just want to achieve my own goals. Sometimes this is met with frustration or failure.

Haha! It's all good brother. I'm very happy for you, I'll be really stoked if Garret gets one.

And this is why I read your posts.... You're your own worst enemy Phil, you're harder on yourself more then anyone else out there.... But, year after year you make it happen... And that's what makes you Phil.... Congrats again on a good one buddy....

Maybe I just overthink things. No. No, I don't. Well maybe a little. :smiley_crocodile::smiley_blackeye:

Thats what it is all about. Too many of todays hunters are missing out on the real meaning and joy of hunting because their measurement system is skewed by TV, social media and forums. I struggle to keep my mouth shut, but to each their own. I promise you will never hear me complain or 2nd guess any deer i pull a gun trigger or bow release trigger on. Fun to chase big ones when the opportunity arise, but they dont fill my freezer. So 6months to 6yrs is my happy range :smiley_coolpeace:

Congrats on the BB, TF. Safe travels home!

We had fun and I tried to relay that through the thread. Dad took home two cooler full of meat! Scale put one cooler @100 lbs and the other @47!!! That's a damn good haul. And the people involved...couldn't of been any better. Good times...

No surprise, but I disagree.

I've hunted four different counties, NW and SE Ohio and have had opportunities during almost every sit, even with relatively limited seat time. I spent three days in Morgan county hunting heavily pressured public land on almost zero pre-hunt intel, and could have shot three different bucks. I saw deer and rutting activity every day. I've seen the Facebook page of a local processor absolutely littered with good bucks... A processor that takes in deer from all over the state, mind you. Same processor saying this is one of their best years in a while (bow season has been incredibly busy for them). I know of two 200+ inchers killed up here this year as well.

All anecdotal, I know. But reason enough for me to disagree. Deer hunting in Ohio does not suck. It's the amount of pressure and limited access that sucks.

At one time I felt just like you Jim. When Joe first brought up this topic I thought he was just squalling like a mashed cat. I was still seeing several groups of 3-7 while hunting (12-30 sightings per hunt). Certain fields were showing 20-40 every evening. One evening in late season I counted 73 come out of our thicket. Now, those observation fields rarely produce 1-3 deer in an evening. Just 3 years ago, Braydon used to see 3-8 per sit. He has only seen 8 this year in about 12 sits. I honestly thought mass reduction of deer herd only happened somewhere else. And you will too until it hits home and you honestly see and feel the impact. It may not suck, but sure headed in that direction in a hurry. No reason one should be able to take 6 deer anymore. 1-2 deer is plenty IMO. In our family, that is still up to 6 deer for the year, but far cry from 18.
