I've heard others have had problems with landowners doing chores or farm work while they were there to hunt and messing up their hunts. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in that being an intentional thing but I could see it being a possibility. Doesn't hurt to give the new system a try and see what happens. I've hunted private farms for years and I've seen and heard all kinds of stuff while in the stand. People shooting targets, dogs barking, chainsaws, tractor running. I think some of these hunters have it in their head that it should be quite because it's like that on TV shows. Deer hear that stuff everyday of their life. It might make them wait a little longer to move around so you might not see one that day. That's why it's called hunting.

Try it out and see what happens. Everybody has different experiences and different expectations. Never know unless you try.

One thing in all this equation. If you’re hunting and the farmer is doing what farmers normally do. Don’t panic. The deer see that all the time also. I’ve seen hay or corn being cut, then 10 minutes after they leave deer filter out into the fields. So don’t get discouraged if you see this.

Tried to access OHLAP last year for pheasants and the field was mowed. Spoke w/ program manager and seems like they’d get it handled


Seems like a program with great potential. Hope some land owners along the scioto CREP enter soon

Do they release any birds on OHLAP or is just on ODNR land and state land
Thankfully, no

I sorta kinda see the purpose of released birds. But I would much rather see the ~$210,000 the ODNR spends on released birds be spent on helping the wild birds. That’s a convo for another time….

if you want to get after birds, read about woodcock habitat. Much easier to hunt without a dog as they sit still and do not run. Also easy to get follow up shots. Season is open now.

I brought up exact point above at a public meeting (as a former Pheasants Forever employee) and was drilled by a DOW employee. He wasn't happy i called out their fallacy in front of his peers.

Back to topic, the only thing I know about the above program there is that there is a very good turkey property in Vinton County that is now in it, or was good at one time. I use to spend a lot of time there. I am sad to think of it being overrun with hunters now, but maybe that's a selfish thought. Its so dam hard to find a balance between opportunities for folks and GOOD opportunities. Best thing I can think is maybe this will take some of the pressure off of existing public land. Sharing a 200 acre property with 5 other guys on the same day (and repeat every other day) is not my idea of a good time and just because its private doesn't make it good. Id be willing to bet a good portion of these properties enrolled were already well hunted by whoever asked before being enrolled. As a land owner id much rather lease to a single or small group of hunters for the same price or more then to have it open to every tom, dick and Harry. I can potentially see good opportunities for hunters other then deer or turkey, as thats the species most hunters will be after on most of these....Id rather be in the middle of WNF or Shawnee personally with room to roam.

Just looking at some of the properties, lots of presumed absentee landowners, so this is easy $ for them. I know of 1,200 acres in 4 tracts that would have been perfect for this. God forsaken, BFE private ground mixed in with WNF. The one parcel in my county on this list fits that exact description and the LO lives 10 hours away. Probably 3rd generation family that's never been there at that.

If the location is on OHLAP and inside a township/city that does not allow the discharge of firearms.....bow only? If so then what are you supposed to do if all the spots are literally on a lake? (Questions about nimisilla up near Akron)

Call 1-800-Wildlife or the District 3 office and ask them.

I have not. Just haven’t been quick enough on the mouse clicks to get a spot I was interested in.

I'm an idiot. I looked at that last year just never could get the time to pull the trigger. I'm anxious to hear the experiences others have had.
Come on guys we all know you can click that mouse and pull that trigger with the best of them. 😂

I thought all OHLAP properties were bow only. I may be making that up but I swear I read it somewhere.

Less work and interaction with other humans. Maybe they don't know anyone that wants to lease it. Maybe they have an in with the DNR or a soft spot for people that don't have the means to pay for hunting access. I could see the more philanthropic minded landowners embracing this program. Feels good to some to work with a government agency to provide resources for the "less fortunate".

Not every land owner likes to see deer. Leased farms usually cause deer herds to grow. In turn that cost the farmers money to feed them.

Those are all good and valid reasons, I ask because living in NC, when people find out I have land in Ohio two things happen. Hey when you taking my hunting? Or do you want to lease it?

I believe those are only waterfowl spots and I think they have and exception on the The discharge firearms during the season and only in. Certain areas but I could be wrong
