Well, 2.6" in the last 24 hours and another 1.5" forecast today 🌧 making a mess.
No joke, the number of people asking to call off school in a community that's not seen a tornado since horses were the primary mode of transport is ridiculous. People are soft. You flatlanders are in a different bucket, but these damn Appalachians done gone soft!
They let our kids out of school and they took off for the city. Fucking idiot kids! They must get it from the wife....
Ask the people of Lakeview and Russell's Point how they feel about it.
This is a double edged sword. Tornado takes out a school. Mass casualties. Is a brick school safer than many houses? Probably so in most cases. If everyone is spread out in their homes throughout a school district. . . .a couple or few houses get hit. . .there is a lower number of people hurt versus if they are all in one location.
Statistically? Pretty low odds either way. BUT. . . If something like the Indian Lake tornado hits, do we risk everyone in a single location and hope it misses the school? Or do we want them dispersed throughout the community to where only a portion of them are hit? It's a gamble either way. I can assure you the school will take the full blame if they keep the school open and it is hit by a tornado.
It truly is a lose lose scenario where schools are forced to error on the side of caution. It is mitigation of liability. If they closed the school, the school reduces their liability risk. In all reality, (with no science or statistics to back my thinking), I would say the chances of being hurt or killed by a tornado are "likely" fairly low.

Schools are usually the Tornado shelter for the area. Living in fear isn't living at all.
I think over the last 20 years we've become the most risk averse populace ever. And we've given up so much freedom as a result. It's a shame where we will end up.
Our county closed the schools early. Not the districts. We are just now under a Tornado watch.
I am part of the guys that are first responders and go myself sometimes, it's always ugly and it truly is terrible. The areas are generally very small. This system has completely shut down a huge area. That simply isn't right. Like how I refused to take precautions for covid, then it changed my life forever. Doesn't mean I ran out a got the jab, or pushed it on others. If my house gets leveled tonight I will feel no different. Hundreds of thousands of people are shut down from work already because of this. Now imagine if those people donated an hour of time or pay towards anyone in need. That is how America should work. Show up and rebuild, don't hide in fear!

I don't disagree @giles . It is the same with snow. Are you paying for snow plowing and salt spreading or a reduction in liability? Are you closing schools for the safety of the kids or to push liability away from the school? Just saying they have their hands tied.
Yes, this. Most people are afraid of everything, including their own shadow because our government and media outlets monger fear every chance they get, and make it up if they need to. Combine this with people just being generally fucking stupid and gullible and it ends badly for all of us.
