Safety harnesses and other safety

FB_IMG_1756145634034.webp

Hey Everyone! This is Adam. A friend and hunter that we have tracked for... (He fell 20 feet Sunday doing a deer stand) He is in a world of pain (3 cracked vertibrae) and lucky to be alive....
PLEASE BE CAREFUL!
His Own Words: "I Never Thought It Would Happen To Me"

This is a great reminder. I am always trying to be safer as I grow older. One thing I do not see discussed as much as prevention is recovery once the fall happens. Obviously without harness/tether/linemans/safety ropes there is no recovery but if you do fall and your restraints are in place and work what is your next move? I haven't had to do this YET but I play scenarios over in my head as to what I would do hanging from my harness/tether etc? How will I get back to my stand or on my stick? If a full length safety rope how am I descending and relieving stress on thighs etc. I do not have all these answers but it is important to consider them all. Is my phone always on me, does someone know where I am, can I cut myself down if I need to? I wish I was strong enough to always pull myself back to where I need to be but what if I can't? All of these scenarios are way better than falling and defying gravity but still important to think thru in my opinion.

Sure hope for a speedy recovery! Definitely thinking of him and all the other hunters getting after it to get ready this season. Still see plenty of pics and videos of people setting stands without harnesses on AND tied in.

If you have a system where you can descend you don't have to worry about thigh pressure relief.

If you're on a harness that doesn't reach the ground, most to the newer ones have a foot loop you can use to alleviate pressure. Stand in the loop and that relaxes pressure

To add to that, the biggest thing about if you do get yourself into bind is to not panic. Think through what resources you have and evualuate your situation.

The great thing about saddles is if you do get in trouble, if you have pouches on it, you can keep your backup climbing stuff in them. Life support gear doesn't do you any good if it's in your pack that is laying on the ground or still hung up in the tree!

I know accidents will happen! So I always remember these words being told to me by a wise old man when I was a young man. When you get yourself off the ground you better get SMART real fast. So if you're getting on a ladder at home or climbing a tree remember to get smart and don't get yourself hurt! Don't let a accident happen! People are counting on you to get home.

Seeing that guy lying in the bed sends chills down my spine... Man to think many, many moons ago Id take my trusty Baker climber and hike into parts unknown and scoot 20 ft. up a tree and NEVER WEAR A SAFETY BELT... Harness's were unheard of... Man was I stupid... Thank God nothing happened... Today my feet don't leave the ground unless I'm attached to the tree... And yes have a plan in case you find yourself dangling there... Always have your phone and knife on your body in a spot where you can get at them if needed.... Hunt out of a hang on... Always secure it to the tree with 2 rachet straps...One strap can fail... The ladder sticks... Always add a rachet strap at the very top, so when transitioning to and from the stand, those sticks cannot shift and cause you to lose your balance...And who does this??? Ill bet not many ... When transitioning from the sticks to the stand or visa versa... DONT STEP OVER THE CABLE THAT SUPPORTS THE STAND... Instead step on the edge of the stand with your toes under the cable, then when both feet are on the stand step over the cable... This avoids a long step over the cable and less likely to trip... Don't worry if the stand is hung correctly with two straps it's not going to budge ...
ABOVE ALL DONT LEAVE THE GROUND UNLESS YOUR ATTACHED TO THE TREE...
