Dang... what a friggin weekend! Big thanks to Jesse and Sandridge Outfitters for the great times and hospitality. Jesse is probably one of the most efficient cooks I've ever seen in a kitchen, BTW... That dude cranks out an awesome array of chow, and at the same time leaves the kitchen spotless... very impressive. IMO, Jesse would make a great "camp bitch." lmao
The first morning was one of the coolest experiences I've ever had while hunting. The coyotes lighting up at less than 100 yds, and the turks thundering right back on the opposite ridge... it was hair-raising to say the least! I didn't think there was any way today was going to be better than that.
We heard those faint few gobbles there this morning around 10:30ish, and decided to slide across the corn field for a peak. As we crested the top of the knoll and reached the tree line, Jesse through his hand up telling me to stop. "He's right there," he said, and I could tell by his tone that he was close. Next thing I know, that supposed lone gobbler turned into 6 absolute slammer longbeards!!! One of the birds in the group looked to be a legitimate 25-30 pounder... no bullshit. It was unreal. These birds looked like they came straight out of a painting... Probably the most colorful gobblers I've ever seen. And there they were, not 150 yards away, all 6 in full strut, just doing circles around each other. I threw everything I had at those birds... they gobbled here and there, at one time all 6 were sounding off... but there was no way they were coming to us. Since we were at the property line, all we could do is stand there and enjoy the show... and what a show it was!
I tell you what, even though none of us pulled the trigger on any birds, these were probably the best two days I've ever had in the spring turkey woods. I've never been this happy with getting "skunked" before. Thanks again for having me down for the weekend, Jesse!
