Savage 220.... Next on my list of guns I gotta have... I guess if I hunted Ohio I would opt for a rifle shooting straight walled cartridges. That would be interesting.. Everyone here in Jersey is switching to the Savage 220 20 gauge.. Also shell of choice is the Remington 3 inch Accu-Tip.. This gun is a "TACK DRIVER" shooting the 3 inch Accu-Tip, so much so as 3 inch Accu-Tip's are almost impossible to find in local stores as they get gobbled up as the season draws closer..

I've used either a muzzleloader or a slug gun my whole hunting career up till this year. I was going to get a savage 220 but came across a steal on a lil thumbhole h and r .45-70 that I couldn't pass up because I was also toying with the idea of getting one. I took my buck opening morning with it and was not disappointed at all. Shot was around 100yds and it shattered his front shoulder and blew the heart in half. The buck only made it 20-30 yds or so. I was a little leery about having only one shot but kinda perfected a reload before I went out. Luckily I didn't need a follow up. I'm gonna try and fill the freezer with a doe on the bonus weekend with it too.

I shoot a scoped 870 Wingmaster with Remington sluggers. It's limited range but it's what I got lol. I'm leaning heavily toward picking up the CVA single shot 45/70. For under $300 you can't beat it IMO. Only one shot but so is my muzzleloader and reloads much quicker. It's also a classic caliber which I kinda like

go find a Trip Fours Marlin and it will holds its vslue for a long long time. These CVA and H&R single shots are not going to hold their value once Ohio approves a 30/30 and 35 Remington.
Keep your eyes open for an underpriced Marlin 336.
Another consideration is a T/C Contender with a rifle barrel in a 444 or a 430 JDJ(same)

. Is there any talk of allowing the 30-30?

The .444 Marlin is very difficult beat if just comparing ballistics of the common calibers and readily available guns and ammo, in fact I don't think you can beat it.

Choice would depend on how and where you hunt. As a 200 yd point and shoot caliber with a bunch of retained energy it certainly comes out on top but you may not need that kind of energy or range where you hunt.

444 Marlin still carries nearly the same velocity at 200 yds that a 44 Mag has at the muzzle and retains 1500 lbs of energy at 200 yards, more that 500 more than the 44 mag at 100 yards, 1,000. bit again is your shots are all 100 and closer you not really need the extra get up and go the .444 delivers.
I agree with Lundy! I own one and want another!

2 3/4" ACCUTIPS are all I shoot outta mine, trust me I've spent a lot on other rounds to make sure I get the most accurate one... The ACCUTIPS out performed any other round hands down....

Did not try the 3" so I will put that out there, but from talking to 3" shooters they get the same just further out...

Actually if the state would just make the .35 Remington a legal round I'd be golden, then I could use my grandfathers deer rifle....

X2 on the 2 and 3/4 accutips. I tried the sst and went from about a 1 inch 100 yard group to a bout a 3 and a half. The accutips are outrageous but I have taken many deer and have yet to be dissapointed. Furthest tracking job has been about 35 yards down hill.

I own two 870s....one in 12ga and one in 20ga. Ive killed deer with both but never been overly impressed with their accuracy. The 20 is a youth model. A 6' tall 250lb 45 yr old man probably looks silly carrying it LOL but its light and easy to carry and it kills deer within my typical range of under 75 yards. Both guns have cantilever barrels and scopes.

The last 8 years or so your likely to see a muzzleloader in my hands. My original is a CVA Apollo inline using No 11 caps....newer one is a TC Triumph(nice gun). Both are more accurate than my slug guns.

I havent considered a rifle since Ohio started allowing them. Dont know much about them. Maybe someday soon i will do some research and try one out.
After reading this thread Im going to have to go do some research on that Savage 220 also.
