@Sgt Fury

I perused your question in the “what’s in your cup” thread and figured I’d start a new thread that folks can see and add their take on this subject.
It’s early and I just got woke up by a dog who had too go outside for a couple minutes. So I figured I’d start something then when I’m more wide awake, I’ll add my adventure in relocating too an area that people still shake their head at for us too move too. 😂
I know quite a few on here have done the move too different states due too job relocations, or just changing jobs. I’ve done it when I was younger and when the wife and I got married. Bounced around a few states, until finally settling back where we grew up. It was one of those easy decisions, especially when the kids arrived.
Fast forward too our empty nest years, the wife wasn’t thrilled with the winters like she once was, her job was stressing her out, her family was stressing her out. I’d retired and for me I was good with staying or going. We’d always talked about heading too the Carolina’s at some point in our lives, but nothing serious up too that point.
One day she came home from work and instead of a stressed out wife, I saw a woman who was no longer happy, and one on the verge of losing it. She couldn’t take anymore and it was affecting her health.
So, we started looking online. Our son and daughter in law were living in Columbia SC at the time. I know I didn’t want sand and pine needles around me so that ruled that area out. I started looking at houses only with basements. That ruled out a lot of sand and pine needle areas.
North Carolina, above Charlotte I started seeing more and more. Pictures didn’t reveal many pine trees, and from there I started the crime reports for different locations.
I liked the Hickory area on paper, but it didn’t trip our trigger when we arrived. Davie county was another area. Small town environment, close too metro areas. Little over an hour to Charlotte, Greensboro, and half that too winston Salem.
4 major lakes within an hour. Mountains a little over an hour. Beach in 3-5 hours depending on your tastes. Hurricanes not a big worry. Mild winters, very little snow. Summers are a little more than what Ohio has, but not unbearable.
I can be back in Salem in less than 7 hours, stroud’s in 5. 😂
Apparently I’m a little more awake than I thought. I’ll add more later on. But suffice it too say, we made a good choice so far. It’s worked out pretty well for us.

Being retired affords me the time too travel around. I’ve gotten the lay of the land down decent enough too know how too get most places and GPS helps with the rest.
Covid did add a twist too some of the plans after moving down here. The wife was going too go back too work after we got all settled in, I told her too just take the remainder of the year off and go back after the new year. Looking back that was a blessing in disguise…..
Covid hit, things shut down, and we were at a point in our lives, she didn’t have too work so much as she needed that regime so too speak. So basically she retired when we moved here.
We eat a lot more home cooked meals now, we did the same when the kids were living at home, but got away from it too some point when we were empty nesters. We’d eat out a few times a week, just trying places we’d always wanted too but never did. Now we may eat out a couple times a month.
You don’t see as many mom and pop restaurants as we did up in the Youngstown area. Less ethnic food and more chain restaurants. Most of the pizza places use thin crust and sausage isn’t ground but sliced. That took some getting used to. We started making our own pizza and with some good results. But we did find a brick oven pizza place and it’s pretty good. But still eat more homemade than carry out.
BBQ is king down here though, and they do have some dynamite BBQ places. We have a local chain called Little Richards which is our go too and everyone that visits always wants too go there after being there once. Steak place is 3 bulls, awesome steaks and a they have a killer cauliflower appetizer. Diner, so far is Maw Maws. Killer breakfast. Used to eat there quite a bit when we first moved down but haven’t been there in a while.

Must’ve also been a pain trying to find a good family doctor, dentist, good fishing/hunting spots, etc. it’s like you’re basically starting over from scratch.
Good part is that you are both retired and can enjoy exploring your new environment…plus less stress on the wife. I’m guessing some of the wildlife you come across isn’t like the stuff you encountered while in Ohio.

Sorry Sam, but all southerners know that Florida is not part of the south. 🤣
Some of my Florida ancestors who weren't southern.

Being the wife was a nurse in her prior life, I left the Dr finding too her, I found a dentist, based on our dental plan listing and google reviews.
Deer for the most part in our area are about a 1/3 smaller than what I’d say I was accustomed too in Ohio. I have no plans on deer hunting down here. I’ll make the trip north and hunt with friends. For me at this point in my life, I prefer the social aspect of deer hunting more so too the actual filling the freezer. Although my end goal is just that. If that makes sense?
Fishing is another ball game, I fish less down here but have better outings. So I guess it would be quality over quantity….
Too a point it is starting from scratch, but you can see it as a bad thing or a good thing.
I guess being in the military helped in that fact of it. You met new people and disconnected with others over the years. I do have my core group of friends, always will. Two of them are down here as well. One is 10 minutes away, another just over an hour.

One thing I will add, the majority of my life was spent in NE Ohio. 6 years of active duty in varying locations. The remainder in the reserves and traveling with that position. You take for granted the Sun up there, down here most days are sunny. Up there most days are overcast. I believe in the long run the less sun makes for more depressing experience. You don’t realize it as you’re there and only notice it more and more as I travel up there too visit, fish with friends or deer hunt.

Little Richard’s is good BBQ, if you want to try something different take a trip to Speedy’s in Lexington, then the BBQ Center for a banana split. (I like Speedy’s BBQ better)

We relocated from Anchorage Alaska to SW Ohio. Wife and 3 kids made the move 9 years ago. This is now home. We love it and I don't see us moving out of the area. We knew zero people when we moved here and are now a staple in the community. The locals help us and we help them. Being that we don't have family close, they are our family and we treat eachother as such. This Christmas eve we will be hosting the biggest family party yet. It seems to increase as we get older and family's get smaller.

Relocating takes work. You can't just say or think you are a good person, you need to be that person your kids think you are. You need to be that example for them. If you don't, odds are that nothing will change beyond the scenery. Good people strive in any location. 👍

One thing in any relocation scenario, look at what you have, what you need and things that just take up space. Between the costs of moving them, the labor of moving them, are they worth it. If you have too think about it? Get rid of it.
