TOO Garden Thread

Found another old garden picture. This was probably the summer of 2011.

I think the strategy was to crowd everything to prevent weeding!
 
Well early stuff is poking thru finally. The carrots beets potatoes onions peas lettuce and radishes are all up. And noticed a few green beans popping through also today. I put out my broccoli cabbage Brussels sprouts and cauliflower a week or so ago, and they seem to be doing well. Today I put my warm season plants out such as tomatoes peppers pickels. So one garden done 2 more to go and lots of work from here on out but well worth it in the long run.
 
My seedlings (this time around) are doing great! They are still in peat pots (yellow beans, 3 squash types, tomatoes and cucumbers) and I thought I'd transplant them next weekend. Think they can be done this weekend instead or is it too early?
 
Mixed up a tank of herbicide for the lawn and sprayed the garden while I was at it. First time the lawn has been sprayed for weeds in probably 3-5yrs. Just not a priority. haha

Hoping to get the garden rototilled tomorrow and mix in some more compost. Need to get on it. Who knows when the next rain will keep me out of it for another several days or weeks.

Diane- I do not know the answer to your question. I do believe it has something to do with ground temperature. Our ground temperatures have just started to warm up in the last week or so, thus all the dandelions you are now seeing everywhere. Until the ground temps get to a certain level, many plants/weeds/etc., will not flourish.
 
Thanks Phil. I thought I had read somewhere that after the 17th was usually safe, but I can't find it now. I think I'll wait until next weekend.

With the temps up now they should be OK I would think.
 
Well not to be outdone by you homesteader types, I've started a garden this year. By that I mean I have purchased some seeds, and tilled the virgin ground a half dozen times. I added some lime the other day per one of my farmer buddies, and tilled it all in this morning. I have busted that clumpy dirt into somewhat manageable soil, and plan to till it one more time before planting. I have raised small gardens before and have always liked the preparation part and the planting, it's the weeding and picking I hate.

Just make sure you put down plastic/fabric between the rows or even straw around the plants...a few bucks for either method is well worth it, IMO!
 
Yea I use a lot of straw and it cuts down on weeds and holds moisture in during dry spells and at the end of the year I burn it off and work in the ashes it seems to help the ground but you have too watch your pH levels with the ash. I use pelletized lime each year too help with this .
 
IMG_20140524_205501.jpgeverything finally made it up this last week in my garden and things are looking good. I haven't checked my two at my parents in the last few days but I'm hoping them too are coming good. Been too busy in the fields may find time too check them out tomorrow.:smiley_bril:
 
Everything is planted! Yay!

13 tomato plants ( 3 kinds)
9 butternut
9 crookneck
9 zucchini
2 bell peppers (I'm going to go buy 2 more big ones, these plants are dinky)
10 cucumbers (6 are in straw bales though, so I'm not getting my hopes up on those)
12 yellow wax beans; then 6 more bags of yellow bean seeds

Except for the tomatoes and bell peppers, I grew everything from seed and transplanted it all (Well, except for the additional yellow beans I wanted to stagger)
