These are older pics. I used to put down plastic to keep the weeds down. Then I switched over to grass clipping. The grass clippings worked much better and I also rototilled the clipping into the ground at the end of the season.

I later added mulch so I didn’t have to mow/trim around the garden.

No, sprinkler set up in the middle of the garden. Had to put it up on top of cinder blocks so the water streams would reach everything. As the plants grew taller, I would add blocks.
It not as elaborate as what many of you have or what I used to do when the boys lived with us, but it's our little annual victory garden. Just finished up de-weeding and turning the earth with the hand shovel. Now it's ready for the wife to start planting our tomatoes, peppers and whatever herbs she cares to grow this year.

I prolly got more plants than my 3 beds can really hold but we shall see how they grow and turnout. Next step this week is to build a fence or barrier to keep the deer and other critters away.
Dang. Hims not playing around...what is the ground temp? You gotta be the first person in the ground down here.
Not sure what ground temp is but my forecast here has high temps in the 70’s and lows in 50’s to mid 60’s for next 9 days.

Didn’t, I worked for the phone company and would always find some at construction sites. Rebar would work just as well.

Large bamboo would work but it’s not permanent as it will rot after a couple of seasons. That’s what I used before going to ground rods.Have you priced rebar lately?
I bought nine 8’ long t-posts I was planning on using for tomato stakes but thought if I can find something like you have I’d use the t-post for my fence posts. The longest rebar they had at Lowe’s was 2’ and them fugger were $3.88 a piece. I used those for supporting my bed walls. I need 12 more though.
They usually have the cut version and the full lengths in a different spot. Did you ask anyone if they had some? Had to revisit the garden this afternoon. The wife and I attended the 'Adena Mansion & Gardens' ( https://www.adenamansion.com/tickets/ ) plant sale last Saturday and purchased twice as many plants this year so, I had to increase the size of this year's garden for that reason.
It's now a 10' x 15' rectangle. I hand-shoveled and raked everything out that doesn't need to be in it. All the pulled up sod has been replanted at a couple of low rut locations near the barn. Just finished cleaning everything up for this evening and now I'm beat. I'll finish her up tomorrow by planting everything we currently have, which all of the plants are completely organically grown from nonengineered seeds, nothing but the real original deal.
If you've never been to 'Adena Mansion & Gardens' in Chillicothe, I have to say, its really a wonderful place to go visit sometime. A lot of Ohio and early country history can be revisited or discovered there. Anyhow, thought I'd add my very latest garden update. We're gonna have at least twice as much veggies this fall, which is always a good thing!

Red potatoes are coming up nice, planted 39 tomatoes last night, putting in the peppers and beans tonight hopefully. Torn between the garden or killin the longbeard I have on camera going to the roost

Brocolli is going in this weekend, finishing their hardening now. Brought out the rd 1. maters and peppers to meet sunshine for the 1st time yesterday, they'll stay in the garage the next 1-2wks based on the weather and how they harden. Couple look weaker than I like this AM.
Rd 2 maters are coming along nicely and watermelons are poking through.

Just finished up planting. Started last night but had to quit ¾ quarters the way through because of the mosquitoes were so bad. Just need a couple of more tomato cages and plant some marigolds around it, then tend to her until harvest time. My future college football season Salsa batch. Already can’t wait!
5 varieties of tomatoes, 4 varieties of peppers, 3 varieties of lettuce, kale, time, and parsley.
Finally got to play with the new toy and I gotta admit, I'm spoiled now! Super pleased with how the tractor and tiller performed. Hit it once just to clip all the grass, then put it full depth and hit it twice. Let it dry all day, then hit it twice again. I'll raise it back up and will top it one final time before planting this weekend. We're off and running!
