Bumping this as a...well, I’m lost right now. Looking to upgrade campers to a giant unit and thinking I undertrucked myself. I’d really love to have a 2018’ F-450 with a 5.9 Cummins mated to an Allison. Be freaking done truck shopping for life.

Dang. Let me send a text to a buddy. He has recently posted a gorgous F450 Platinum. Crew cab. Pearl color. Loaded to the gills. Fairly new. Miles were not bad and I didn't think the price was bad either. Although I do admit, I've never really shopped for them.

I don’t know what I’m doing...in a manic stage. Building the dura is also on the table. Somethings gonna happen here pretty quick. Just no idea what way to go. Mind is spinning and I probably don’t “have” to do anything besides install a hitch, at this point. Because she’s sold on buying a new camper.

Thing is...I spend $5,000 building this truck and it still isn’t enough. I’m out $5,000, because I’ll never get money back because I upgraded it. It’s worth more unmolested, IMO.

Son, you are on the verge of locking at least $100K on toys. Not a decision to be made lightly or in a manic stage.

Take a breath and give it a few days/weeks.

How big a camper are you thinking?
You saw mine. My truck handled it great. Would pull it anywhere without hesitation. Went as far as Myrtle Beach with it.

Only things you really need to do is injectors, put some bags on the back, and put a tow tune on it. Anything else is because we can't leave things alone. 🤣

Sound advice. FWIW....I think I have learned. Take $100K and buy yourself an all out truck. What's it worth in 5 years?

Take the same $100K and invest it (say mutual funds for simplicity purposes). What's that worth in 5 years? (plus you have an emergency fund if needed).

Keep what you've got and drive it to the junkyard someday.

No doubt Ben, but there is a fine line in these scenarios. It is the line of being too conservative vs. living once. No return on investment, and remember, scenarios like this require a full investment to be made at once in the example you gave, can compare to memories made with family and friends vs. watching numbers grown in an account you may never live to see or use.

1. People need reliable transportation for work and for pleasure.
2. The cost of pleasure differs from person to person/family to family and neither is right or wrong.

My wife and I made certain choices when it came to pleasure spending. Instead of spending a couple thousand each year on beach vacations, that $ was put into trucks & campers. Did it cost more than yearly beach vacations, absolutely! But, and a big but for us is you can't put a pricetag on memories made with your children when young and we want to be able to do that more than 1x/year.

Being able to hook up and go whenever the urge hits is a great feeling and having confidence in the equipment to do so is a small price to pay.

Unfortunately, $100K in a new 5th wheel and truck combo is the low end these days. I don't fault you one bit (ain't none of my or anyone else's damn business what you do with your $) if you go that route. I'm just saying don't make rash decisions on such large purchases.
