We were late getting to the party. Yesterday’s midday warm up really had the muskrats moving. So we went in the afternoon and set 8 traps in this little spring fed marsh… 6 carrot-baited body grips, 2 body grips in runs, and the a colony trap in a main run. The cold that moved in last night kind of shut them down but we still managed 3 nice rats on our check this morning. She made about an inch of ice just last night.

Empty again. Did have one on cam. View attachment 217063
I will go down and look here in a bit, but I think I would see a catch circle in the background if one was in a trap. Be easy to spot with the fresh snow.
Check to make sure your traps aren’t getting cleaned out by mice. They can strip all the bait from a dog proof trap without it ever firing. If they are, put a golf ball on top of the trap… mice can’t move it but obviously raccoons can. And there’s a visual attraction for the raccoon as well.

Are you putting the carrots on the trigger of the 110? I never had much luck with the baited body grips when I was running rat traps, could stand to learn that

Yep, baby carrot skewered onto the trigger. I am still learning of course, but I find that they work pretty well on submerged sets when we have ice and natural food is harder to get to. Only other thing is I only use Bridger 150’s instead of 110’s. I don’t have much luck with the 110’s. Maybe because the rats up here are so big. Adult rats are generally 2x or bigger up this way.

I have a few dozen 160s from my rat trapping days that I removed one spring from. Those were my favorites!

Yes! You get it! Those single spring 160’s are awesome too. 110’s are super cheap and super light… but they miss more rats than they catch compared to the bigger traps, at least for me they did.

Traps were untouched and the bait was still on the ground surrounding them too. Just cold out.

I thought this guy wanted a hug. So I raced down there as soon as I got home.

Didn't even put my bibs on or anything. I was excited to give the grumpy trash panda a good squeeze. Found this

Bastard. I stomped around looking for him thinking he didnt make it far with that trap on his foot. Never seen him. I put fresh bait in the others in the area. See if he will get hungry and return it.

Once camped at Cooks Forest. The raccoons were plentiful and they would take food from your hand. Upon waking up one morning they had unscrewed the top off a Thermos left on the picnic table. Crafty little critters.

Ahhhh damn. One thing about quicklinks, you have to tighten them up with a pair of pliers. If you just hand-tighten them, a critter moving around in circles can (and will) unscrew the collar. Hope he gets greedy and comes back for more!
