Turkey hunt report '17

Set up a blind on a field edge for the quick morning hunt we will squeeze in before school. Out at the gar hole farm now in a roost area. Listening. Saw four deer. One was a stud.

I've been going out for four weeks solo on public land with a bow and no blind. Today I finally got one to bow range, broadside at twenty yards. Perfect release, it stood there and clucked a few times at my decoy then walked off. I went and got arrow and there was some tiny feathers and a smudge of blood on the broadhead but that's it. I don't know what happened. I walked all of the 50 acre field just in case but I believe that turkey ain't dying anytime soon. I feel awful, going out to shoot my bow and make sure it's on point tomorrow. They were gobbling at me from the trees above me while I was packing up my truck so hopefully that was him.

Two gobblers on the roost at first light cutting loose every few minutes, about a 1/4 away on another property and hit the ground, gobbled a few more times and haven't heard from them again...
Nice morning though lol

It's getting harder and harder to get up at 4 and make an hour drive down here. I had one that sounded like it was 50 yards away gobble at 6:30. Then a few minutes later after I had tried the slate it sounded like it has passed me up and had made its way through the woods and along the edge of the hill before dropping down across the creek. I can't figure out what I'm missing here. Do I need a decoy to draw them out?

Did you hear any hens?

I haven't heard any hens the whole time I have been hunting just gobbles. It sounds to me like when one gobbles the rest of them gobble. Maybe that's my next move to try?

I had two gobbles earlier where I last did battle. I went in that direction to await their next gobble & nothing, no cluck either. I had a lone hen come in behind me & bust my decoy. Then some deer busted me as I removed the decoy. I'm just walking around a bit now & clearing up some of the logging paths as I wait.

I'd probably sit tight lol. Those turkeys will see you long before you see them.
