I believe those midges hatch from cracked mud typically at the bottom of a natural water feature. May not be a big issue with plastic.
Correct,, Midges that cause EHD come out of mud that has formed in standing water that has dried up...

Just saw this on Facebook. It’s very similar in size to the water holes everyone has up in Buffalo County. They are just small ponds on ridge tops and are very effective during the rut when warmer days occur. If you’ve ever seen the show “Addicted to the Outdoors “, Jon and Gina hunt the same farm I did and are usually perched over one of the many holes. They work and if I owned ground to manage, I would put one in.

I've got natural water, but I can't enjoy the property in the summer due to mosquitoes. It was very flooded today. It's usually about a half acre a d today it's about 2 acres. I've contacted the private lands biologist for advice on improving it.

Bedrock under that? Rent something and I’ll come dig it out. We can stock it with edibles.

I've done the half plastic barrel below a spring. It works OK, but you will have to clean the silt out periodically. Our place in in the hills of Jefferson county. We have made 3 small watering holes all below natural springs and that is where I put out my mineral blocks now. No flowing water except for springs on our place. Our little watering holes draw a lot of wildlife.
