As Rick said hunting has turned into a very Big Business.. Look at Basecamp Leasing, Huntdeerinohio, Ohio Outdoor Properties, just to name a few. All making money off of Ohio hunting land.. Looking on the brighter side.... As an outsider I have noticed less talk about deer hunting in Ohio in the hunting communities... So maybe things will lighthen up.. I'm sure fracking in Ohio has also been the culprit when hunters have lost land. As a side note: Remember I mentioned I lease land in Athens County and let two guy's hunt? Well I gave up on it as I never saw a buck over 125. I kept in touch with one of the guys I let hunt and he said it was re-leased to an Ohio resident and they were told "NO TRESPASSING WHATS SO EVER".. Guess its not always non-residents that tie up land...

I don't think its a matter of allowing people to hunt your lease or not. Hell I don't even think its a matter of allowing leasing.

I think the issue is Ohio has some of the lowest NR license costs for such a "big buck state" Due to Ohio/KY having some great hunting and being east enough that people from the east coast want to come here and hunt we should raise the amount it costs.

Honestly sometimes I wonder if anyone in the DNR ever took a supply/demand course. This should be that hard to figure out. At one point will a price increase in NR license start to decrease the participation from said group.

I can tell you they could raise it 200% and I don't think it'd decrease participation by more then 25%. The state would make more money and it would free up a few more acres for local guys as well. Less guys= more land in theory.

I thought I read or heard that it's not the fault of the ODNR that the NR licenses haven't been raised but it was the state politicians not passing it.

Chad, it's great that the farmer turns down lease money but enjoy it brother! A sudden heartattack, divorce, fatal accident or other tragedy and it can be gone in a flash!

Well whoever figures that out we need to make a change. Iowa is a tag system. Just saying.

True. Anything can be gone in a flash though. I'm just fortunate that I've never had to pay anyone money to hunt, and I don't have the money to give either. So if they ask for help, I help them. I keep an eye on the place while I'm out there.

I think its a great idea to raise Ohio's license fees.., A lot of quality buck's harvested every year in Ohio and many non-residents would not complain. This may or may not free up some land, but it would put more money in the budget to improve hunting and fishing in Ohio. Reason the state doesn't want to raise it too high is the fact that they know non-residents contribute a ton of money to the local economy every year. So why chase them away. Again hunting is BIG BUSINESS...

It always has been a big business, IMO it's just gotten out of control within the last several years and alot of it has to do with social media and the hunting shows on TV. I took a few years off from hunting some years ago and when I came back and was ate up with it like I am today it just wasn't the same. I can't tell anyone shit around my area and I'm sure as hell not going to post it on Facebook or I'll get my toes stepped on, it's happened a few times already.

Cousin Bubba has been wanting to come up from NC to hunt Ohio for several years. I think he is coming this year. I looked up the prices a couple days ago. It will cost him $125 for NR license and $24 for an either sex tag. He asked if that was accurate. Claims it cost him more than that to drive 30min across the border to hunt GA. I had zero clue just how cheap it was for our NR. I am not bashing them. People don't come to Ohio for rock climbing or alligator hunting. They go spend money in other states for prime access. One of our draws to Ohio is the deer hunting. We have made it very accessible to most budgets. I think it is a little too accessible. Another $50-100 won't stop them and will generate more revenue. Not sure if the money would be put back into hunting land and habitat. If it were, I would be willing to pay more as a resident as well. I just don't think the money would benefit me unless I drove hours to get to some public land.

The year before last I went to the deer summit. The one I was at had a politician there. He told us that it was shot down because the ODNR didn't give a reason for the increase. He also went on to say that they needed to come up with a solid plan for the "extra" funds that would be created by an increase. Apparently, ODNR failed again in this department. So you can blame the politicians if you want, but while he was talking, those bastards were all looking at the ground!

Here in Jersey we still beat Ohio with an unbelievable deal. Our bear tags cost 2 dollars for both residents and non-residents. Chance at a record book bear for 2 bucks..

What's the bear population like, is it declining like our deer herd?

I pass on bears every year waiting for a big boar.so it's pretty good. Deer herd has been thinned out. Too liberal of a season. Alot of New Englanders come down to fill their freezers.Sounds

couple issues I see with this

1. Claiming all these NR are bringing money into the local economies....Where? They are not bringing in enough to change the local economy. SE Ohio is so poverty stricken it's sad. I have lived and spent YEARS in SE Ohio. I have tried to help the people in these areas who are struggling and I can assure you some guys buying beer at the corner store aint going to help boost that economy enough to make a difference. Now Im not saying it isn't nice to have the income, but lets be real if fees were raised the $ amount that would be affected at the macro level is very small.

2. If we raised the license fees 100%, we would then have to lose 50% of our NR hunters in order to break even to the previous years sales......If any other business could raise their prices and have a 50%+ customer retention rate they would.

Again supply and demand. Our Supply is Ohio, our Demand is NR hunters that has grown in popularity. Yet our license costs haven't increase...From a business standpoint it doesn't make any sense at all.

Agreed few NR hunters are not going to make or break any local restaurant, carry out or motel. Most if not all big ticket items, bows, arrahs, broadheads, clothing, etc are purchased at home. Tele-check has done far more harm to the corner store/check station than the loss of a few NR hunters could ever do.

Come on guy's us out-of-staters gotta have a little piece of the action... Then a bigger piece, and an even BIGGER piece till we have it all.. RELAX.. I'm just kidding.. I feel for you guy's that lose your prime spot to some A/H waving a fist full of $$$.. It suck's.. I leased a gorgeous piece 2 years ago down in Athens County. Evidently the land owner had given two local's permission in the past to hunt. So the first day I was there I was approached by one of them and he said: I guess I lost my hunting spot. I replied NOT REALLY. I said: Heres the week I'll be here hunting. Do me a favor and not hunt that week. You can hunt anytime prior to that and after that. I just wanted a place to hunt and not force any one out of there spot. Now this I know is the exception and most would have told them to take a hike. So I feel your pain.

I would have been in the tree next to you with an air horn if you told me that on one of my spots.

I must be missing something here, as I gave these two gentlemen permission to hunt, while I was not there. And I was the one paying for the lease not them. Had they showed up in a tree next to me with and air horn, someone would have had trespass charges pressed against them. And I would have taken off work and made the 7 hour drive back to appear in court.
And I do believe Ohio takes its trespass laws seriously. You should have written permission at all times on you while trespassing.

Ehhhhh, not really. I'm still waiting on charges to be filed on this dude. He's got three different violations according to our WO that he is supposed to file. Last I heard, he hasn't had time to file the charges. Meanwhile, this dude has run all over the farm on his 4 wheeler this spring and I cannot find a turkey to hunt on what used to be our best turkey property.
