We have what appears to be a racing pigeon at our house, he just showed up and is very tame, trying to figure out how to find the owner. He has a band on his leg.

We had one that stopped by our house for a month at a time, two or three years in a row. My daughter was little and absolutely loved to see the thing come back each year.

We ate one at mingo's once, we roasted it over a fire and sliced up breast slices. That and @giles playing corn hone in the middle of the lane at 3 a.m is the reason we got kicked out of there

A racing pigeon would be cool! Unfortunately my neighbor has bird dogs and raises big...huge pigeons for training the dogs. Every year the pigeons roost on my chimney and fall down down the flue. I pretty much have to rip them apart to pull them past the damper through the fireplace and while they are in there, they shit everywhere and are covered in it. It is a mess. I had to get a pump pellet gun this year so I could only pump it a couple times and wouldn't damage the roof or chimney cap with a missed shot.

Can you but vented cap on it so they can’t fall into it? I’d nip that in the bud.

Yes sir. I'm going to get my fireplace insert replaced sometime in the future and I'll have that addressed. Been putting it off...then I hear the scratching and flapping and it reminds me!
