Brittany Spaniel would be my choice. I had one for eleven years. Was a great family dog and would work a field. Never waterfowled with him but with the way he would retrieve bottle rockets 🤣 guessing he would have had no problems. Listened really well and was eager to please. He would also take a blood trail when asked.

Will be my next dog unless I go for a Boykin which is another breed I really like.

I’m not a dog expert. Having prefaced this statement, GSP are incredibly smart and easily trained. I have two, love them both.

How old are your kids eldoucha? Old enough to help care and train? Or young enough to piss a dog off by climbing all over it? Toddlers I only trust around a few dog breeds. Have you had dogs before? Have the time a dog needs? I ask these to help and have others help you.

Yes, very friendly. One of mine broke a leg badly back in July. He literally stood for two solid weeks after surgery, slept for just minutes at a time before muscle spasms would wake him screaming in pain. I had to carry him everywhere. When I’d lay him down, the motion would often cause spasms. It was horrible and must have been excruciating for him. He had to think I was the cause of his pain and even though he would look at me like he was going to tear me apart, he would never bite. I seriously thought he was going to tear my arm off several times. I wouldn’t have blamed him if he did, he just wouldn’t. Good nature is an understatement. Our dog has chickens and even a cat around him all the time, he protects them. Ruger, my hunting dog, I wouldn’t trust around the chickens, but kids and other animals, no problem.

Giles raises a good point. GSP are high energy dogs. Our house dog has never crapped or peed in the house. He’s never torn up anything inside. He was raised indoors. Ruger, being an outside dog, would bust out all the windows while bouncing off the walls.

One other story about Jake... one day last week he waited on the bus with my son, Mason. Mason told Jake to stay when he got on the bus. He texted his mom to call for Jake or he would have still been sitting there when he came home that afternoon. Ha

I've previously owned a GSP & currently have a Weimawhiner. He can be whiny a times. Both are great with people of all ages. I find it very amusing to see a stranger's reaction who sees this type of dog barreling down on them, not knowing what to expect. Anyway, I can only vouch for their temperament since there's no birds to use them on, & that is, they're the most wonderful dogs in the world. I say that with extreme prejudice.

Sometimes, just the same, it's the type of dog that you least expect that meets your expectations.

Damn bub, gonna be busy with a pup in the house! Working breed dogs demand being worked, so keep that in mind. Kids are gonna get knocked over, faces licked and ice creams taken. Just part of it. My plan with my elnglish lab was have a working dog. He was so good as a family dog as a pup, I never did train him. Didn’t want to ruin him with intense training. 12 years later, I feel like I made the choice because I really didn’t need the project.

My family was about the same age as yours at the time. Many other dogs have came and went since then. This English lab will die with us and fits our family the best. His tail has cleared tables and beat kids faces. He freaking stinks and farts too. I drinks from the toilet or anywhere else he can get water from. Gets in the trash a couple times a year. Can’t leave a bag of snacks next to the chair or he’ll eat it. All typical dog things. But even as an old stinky almost black lab, a baby can get on the floor with him and he just rolls over.

Dog came from champion lines....never retrieved a single animal, followed a single blood trail or done any “work”. He’s always been happy to just lay around or follow someone around.

Our life has changed paths many times and this dog was the only one we’ve never even thought about getting rid of. All the different hunting dogs along the way, they weren’t family, they had a job and didn’t care who took them to do the job. Not sure what I’m saying here, just rambling along about our journey with our lab. Can a working dog be a good family dog? I’m sure they can, but it takes some real dedication. Once this boys gone and the kids move out, I’m gonna get me one of those Deckers I posted.

My wife also has a lab, American lab. Two totally different dogs. Way more energy and needs worked daily or she will drive you crazy.

X2...we had a GSP and she was very high energy. Not a mean bone in her body. I wouldn’t worry about one biting your kids but with all of that energy they have, it’s a good possibility that your kids could get “run over” by them when they run around the house/yard while chasing a ball, etc.

I've had three boxers. Currently a beagle. She is a gluttonous pig and dumber than a bag of hammers. We still love her. Our other dog is a GSP. Hank was a working dog up until our last boxer died. Started life as a left over from the litter. Breeder started him on water fowl. His hunting buddy is a retired K9 officer who has trained all sorts of dogs. Watching him work the retired K9 officer bought him. Started him as a detective unit dog. Sold him to a unit in Indiana. He did everything they asked outside. Inside he was too soft and nervous. Gave him back. I was looking for a blood/deer tracking dog. I bought him and he was kenneled outside. He has always been a lover. He'll melt if you rub his ears. We decided to make him a house dog when we lost our last boxer. Never had been an indoor dog. Had 2 accidents. This was at age 7. Eager to please for sure. Great with kids but our kids are older. They are high energy but if you've had a boxer you should have an idea what to expect. I'd call our GSP very animated. Almost human like with their personalities. SImialr to boxers.

Unlike Brock's though, don't put a chicken or cat near him. I don't think he'd hurt a flea. I know he'd love a cat or chicken . . . .to death. I've seen it more than once.

Lol, “love them to death”.

We also had a GSP for a few years. They’ll tell you exactly what they want with body language. A bit more “squirrel” in them dogs then others. Ultimately, that dog left because he was scared of my daughter. Went and lived a happy life with my buddy Nate and was great. I still hunted him whenever I wanted.

I will always have labs. Just got a silver lab in July and have a 10 year old black lab. Been training the pup to trail deer and he has been doing great. Did his first real trail two weeks ago. Heavy blood trail for over a 100 yards and stayed on trail and found it.
