What's your favorite "bang flop" coyote caliber?

What caliber of rifle do you prefer, for dropping coyotes in their tracks?

I'm shopping for a rifle with DRT (Dead Right There) capability.
Anything from 22-250 to 338 Lapua will be considered...and in any action. :smiley_chinrub:

300 win mag

Just about any distance I can point and shoot. Real flat shooting with plenty of power.

If I was to start over, I'd be giving the 6.5 a real hard look.

For a coyote? [emoji23] A .223 seems to be a popular choice. I've never seen one get up and take off after they got hit.
 
My point being, get a rifle that you have 100% confidence in. Sure I don't "need" a big game rifle to tag a little coyote, sure is a great feeling to know when I squeeze the trigger, game is over.

How long of shots are you thinking? 12 gauge is another good one for close range action.

My go too all around caliber is the .243.... Hornady VMax 58 grain.... it'll kill anything that I need too....

I'm thinking about 200+ yards.
I shot a light colored coyote (male), last Thursday and he was just beyond the 200 yard mark. I was using my Super 17 or 17WSM with a 20gr. bullet @ 3000 f.p.s. The bullet hit him a little forward and ended up breaking his shoulder. I heard him "yip" and run off.
On Friday, he was out again...carrying his right leg and chasing a dark colored coyote (female). He was chasing her across an open soy bean field, on 3 legs and trying he level best to breed her. The were both about 250ish yards, when she laid down to keep him from breeding her and he sat down with his back to me. I set my 200 yard mil dot on the base of his neck, thinking the bullet would drop into his back (heart/lungs) and squeezed off the shot. I heard the bullet smack him as he jumped straight up in the air. They ran out of sight into some weeds.

I've not seen either coyote, since. :smiley_chinrub: This rifle is very accurate, but does not have enough power to kill coyotes at that distance. I've shot plenty of groundhogs inside 200 yards and killed them all.

I'm leaning toward a .243 or larger caliber, but I appreciate your suggestions. :smiley_bril:

A .17 isn't a good yote gun at all. I watched one get hit right in the chest with a hmr at 70 yards and it made it 80 yards into the woods and was gone. Really fast round, not enough lead.
