I have done it multiple times when I was first starting to hunt. Growing up in flat land and then hunting Athens. I didn't realize I needed to lower my aim throwing pumpkin balls down steep hills. Dropped deer, fist bump to dad in another location...turn back around and it getting away. My old man thought I was full of shit until he watched me do it once. Then we figured out what my problem was.

This is the "pretty sure I smoked him...at least 1 lung..." Pic after this one was Maxx and I tracking it. We stopped in mid track....
His one buddy said you smoked him alright... must have been weed before you got in the stand! 🤣🤣🤣

Above video is the back-whack buck. Never seen again (yet).
This is basically same scenario my 12yr old just had on a nice buck Sunday evening. First time I've seen anything like it. I could not get her to snap out of it for a follow up shot before he was gone. We also brought a dog in with no luck other than he found a bed and a few specs of blood where we bumped him. Pretty bummed for her, was just as much my fault for not physically bringing her back to reality lol. First deer she's lost and biggest.

I know it would really depend on the action, if a semi auto a lot easier but my daughter is not fast running the bolt and I dunno if I could have gotten her back on and ready to shoot again.

Hang with it Rick. I don’t know how you haven’t smacked someone yet. Occasionally it is all I can do to keep from doing it myself. As we watched a buck w a busted leg the other night the dad said I don’t know how that dumb kid hit there. It was only 150 yards. I mentioned 150 yards was a long shot for a ten year old to be taking. It’s as if Dad was surprised his ten year old kid had not spent 20 years honing. His marksmanship skills.

Went to Adamsville this am. Maxx Dog got busy and it was a hell of a ride! Lost poor Maxx on a steep hill. Had to throw my body on the bevel to keep up or I was afraid of hanging him. 30 yd ride down the mountain. At the bottom the deer started up the other side and I did not see how he was going to make it. At the top I could not believe the deer would ever die! Maxx went round and round like in circles at the top... Evidently it was a huge scent pool where the deer had stayed for quite a while. Maxx tried going over a steep bank and I seen the deer at the bottom. Deer had been shot on back leg at first joint above the ankle. Blood was equally spaced on this trail 8-10' apart... and now know why.
Goooboy Maxx Dawg!

Second track today was a hoot! Deer is still alive but Maxx made some real friends. They were quite impressed Maxx followed all their blood and showed them even more. After the hunter seen the deer was making loops around the thickets still looking for doe, he called it alive...
Back at the barn he said "Wish my target buck would show up" then showed me a trail cam pic of it. I had to tell him Maxx Dawg already put that one on the tailgate.
Here I was on back side of a property I had been to before. Yes I was closer than I thought... 🤣
