I have done it multiple times when I was first starting to hunt. Growing up in flat land and then hunting Athens. I didn't realize I needed to lower my aim throwing pumpkin balls down steep hills. Dropped deer, fist bump to dad in another location...turn back around and it getting away. My old man thought I was full of shit until he watched me do it once. Then we figured out what my problem was.

This is the "pretty sure I smoked him...at least 1 lung..." Pic after this one was Maxx and I tracking it. We stopped in mid track....
His one buddy said you smoked him alright... must have been weed before you got in the stand! 🤣🤣🤣

Above video is the back-whack buck. Never seen again (yet).
This is basically same scenario my 12yr old just had on a nice buck Sunday evening. First time I've seen anything like it. I could not get her to snap out of it for a follow up shot before he was gone. We also brought a dog in with no luck other than he found a bed and a few specs of blood where we bumped him. Pretty bummed for her, was just as much my fault for not physically bringing her back to reality lol. First deer she's lost and biggest.

I know it would really depend on the action, if a semi auto a lot easier but my daughter is not fast running the bolt and I dunno if I could have gotten her back on and ready to shoot again.

Hang with it Rick. I don’t know how you haven’t smacked someone yet. Occasionally it is all I can do to keep from doing it myself. As we watched a buck w a busted leg the other night the dad said I don’t know how that dumb kid hit there. It was only 150 yards. I mentioned 150 yards was a long shot for a ten year old to be taking. It’s as if Dad was surprised his ten year old kid had not spent 20 years honing. His marksmanship skills.
