What a start to the 2016 Spring Turkey Season! Words cannot describe how damn excited I get this time of the year. I took my niece Samantha out this morning and she sealed the deal at 8:20am. We headed just down the road in Medina Co. to a private piece of land we have been hunting for years. We were banking that they would come off roost from across the road and likely make their way to our location where they love to scratch and strut in early morning. At 6:20 they shock-gobbled a few times letting us know they had roosted just where we had seen them in the past.
Sure enough they did fly down in our direction and headed right towards us and held up scratching for about 30 minutes roughly 180 yards away. We did some very light calling as we had put out a Hen and Jake decoy and once one of the many gobblers who showed up had laid eyes on the decoy, they started making their way to us! I think the video does a much better job at explaining just what happens next, but the dominant gobbler comes screaming past the others in full strut while running and immediately attacks the Jake decoy. I was holding my breath that Sam would give pause and let the dominant gobbler do his thing and take the shot when she had it, but with so many other Toms in the bunch, she set her eyes on the long beard of her choice and pulled the trigger!
She hit him a bit far back but knocked him down in his tracks, only to have all of the others gang up on him and tear him up, which was one Hell of a show! They stayed in the area pecking away at him for 16 minutes and finally mozied off in the direction they had came.
Out of frame were 3 more long-beards that were headed to the commotion just before the 870 rang. In all, we saw 7 Tom's this morning and 1 Jake. Things couldn't have gone more perfectly, maybe aside from taking that Dominant Tom or even the Thick Double Bearded Tom that was in the bunch, but she picked out her favorite and let him have it! This kid has made me SO darn proud that I couldn't be happier to have her in my life and joining me in the woods! Unfortunately, despite being a youth, this wont count as a Youth Bonus for Team 6 because shes an older youth.
This is my first video I shot and actually attempted to edit so bare with the amateur skills. I did learn some things such as no more Auto Focus and instead opt to use the Manual Focus to avoid the noise from the camera and the blur. Any comments are greatly appreciated, and Thanks for Reading & Watching! Great job to ALL of the youths who made it out today and put in the work!
