The two Mason shot were on private. 20 yards off of Strouds Run. In fact the stand is probably less than 5 yards from the line, if that. The first three we saw came from Strouds. The other three came from the private side.

Thanks Brock, It was a blur with all the hunters in camp trying to figure out where everyone was hunting. So your 2 were on private next to public, anyone know where the other 3 were taken? Private/Public?
We only killed one of Strouds and that was Austin's deer. The other two were the deer Joe shot on Rex's...

Thanks Jesse, I had a buddy of mine asking for the details.. I really don't care how many were taken to be honest, I think everyone had a great time and I hope to join the group next year for the in camp festivities!

So from the sounds of it, if you had to choose, the private land seemed much more productive than the public? Is that a fair, honest statement? If there were 20 some hunters and 4 out of the 5 deer tagged was on private, that is one conclusion that seems fair to make. Just curious, although from hunting both public and private land all of my life I kind of already had a pretty good guess.

I knew you were going to go there with this, Seth. Joe was in a good spot for sure, but you can't say it is "managed" land. Mike just bought that piece a month or so ago...a 20 acre parcel. The place Mason was set up is right on the park boundary. The first deer he shot came OFF the park. It is an area anyone with an Ohio license can hunt, we just picked a tree on the private side. That entire area has deer. I will gladly agree with you that northern Highland, and Fayette are depleted. You may recall I was probably the first to point it out and called a whiner. Athens still has deer.

I would say that the number of deer that I saw both hunting and driving around Athens County was comparable to Vinton County in 2007.
Mason and I also had a distinct advantage over everyone else that was hunting. Bait. While all the others were hunting natural deer patterns we were ringing the dinner bell. I did not have to wait for the deer doing their natural routine. But rather was calling all of the deer to me.

I seen a whitetail buck deerz on public and also the one that went past Beener and both of them was Friday evening.

Joe is right, the second deer Mason shot was muching on corn in front of a camera. The first one was feeding on acorns under a white oak. Probably was a big factor to his "luck". Mrex mentioned before the deer will essentially vacate the park once they gobble up the acorns. There seemed to be plenty of them around while we were there though.
Yep. I saw two shooters in the first two hours I spent on that patch of dirt. That's better than my managed land EVER...
