J, yes gps and e collar. I just got a new DC-40 collar. my old DC-30(which I got second hand) has been acting up a bit. I think I got it fixed, but it won't bother me to have a back up. DC-40 comes with collar that tritronics (and other) trainers will fit on. I eliminated the tritronics collar. tracker and zapper share one collar now. Mountain Cur. I went to a competition hunt last March. big one in Tenessee. it was interesting to see what it was all about, but it was just like competitive 3D archery, tournament bass fishing or any other thing that involves money and status for winners. plenty of corrupution and posturing. no thank you.

GT, I don't get too cute when cooking squirrels. most of mine go to the pressure canner and become squirrel gravy, the recipe for which might be one this very thread on first or second page. otherwise, I braise them. you can play lots of variations when braising with different vegetables, stock, wine, etc. squirrel gravy is my favorite, but canned squirrel is fall off the bone tender and could be used for lots of different recipes instead of shredded pork or chicken. I'm gonna go to work on finding or fashioning a squirrel pot pie recipe when the hunting is done. is killin' time now.

Saw my first GPS setup this year and although it's really cool tool too have in the arsenal the price tag for a three system gps.... Wow.... Most of my dogs aren't the type too travel too far out in front of me so as of now I'll pass on them but I can defiantly see there use on the working dogs though..... Nice knowing exactly where they are at any given time....

That is awesome Jamie. Great to see the Mrs join you. Not sure if my wife would partake in squirrel hunting or not. She cooks deer, but says she draws the line at squirrels. Maybe it is time to bring a batch of them home and learn how to cook. Surprise her a bit and it may change her mind.

I have a few things working in my favor toward getting wife out in the woods. one, she loves dogs(especially this one) and is anxious to see Lefty work and be a part of that. she likes shooting her rifle, put some time in at the shooting bench this summer, and is damn good at it. she likes eating squirrel gravy as much as I do. all that, and squirrel hunting behind a talented pleasure/meat dog is easy and enjoyable. no need to be quiet, no sneaking around in super stealth mode, no sitting still for hours at a time. we walk around in the woods, work with the dog, shoot our guns and bring home some food. I doubt I could ever make a bowhunter out of her, but this she likes. something remarkable has happened to my wife in the last two days. she had never killed anything on purpose in her entire life until Friday. now she has a little bit better idea why we hunt. an understanding of what it's really about. a new perspective; the type that only comes when you pull the trigger yourself and get some blood on your hands.

No scent control either. lol

Glad to hear it Jamie. Sounds pretty awesome. Glad you two are finding new ways to enjoy the company of each other. Nothing wrong with that at all.

I love this! Sounds a lot like me although I started with deer and turkey and moved on to squirrels and rabbits. I too thought deer hunting was very boring at the beginning. I love hearing about other women taking up hunting. And this entire thread is great for seeing the squirrel dogs doing their thing. I've never hunted squirrels with dogs but would love to do it some time. Looks like great fun.

This is pretty funny. I didn't realize my son had his scope cam on the last time we went out. I get pretty impatient with him and shoot it myself. Remember, squirrel hunting is new to me too! It's one of only two we saw. I love the reaction after he drops!:smiley_clap:

was hoping for enough of a break in the weather to get out for a short hunt this afternoon. our last hunt until a week from Sunday. was a balmy 10 degrees with bright sun and no wind at 1 pm when we loosed the dog in a woods we've never been in. Lefty made 6 trees. two obvious dens, the other four on their way to skillet. very pleased with Lefty's effort today. hunted strong and fast the entire two hours it took us to cover a nice sized Delaware county woodlot. that's my life long hunting buddy, uncle Charlie(aka "The Goof"), in the pic. Brrrr.

thanks. you should not refer to me as "Mr. Miller", lest the good folks here who don't already know better think I'm deserving of any such respect.

Mike, that is hilarious! my wife really struggles to go from looking at squirrel with naked eye to finding them in the scope. I get really aggravated with her sometimes. hell, she gets aggravated with herself. I know it takes some practice and experience to do it without thinking, but I lose patience fast when there is a squirrel that needs shot. Lefty gets pissy about it, too. :tantrum: :) to her credit, she has gotten quite good at finding them when we approach a tree.

my game plan today got axed just before I left the house, so as plan B I rustled Headshot outta the sheets and took her to southern Ohio with me. grey squirrels not out real good today, as is often the case this late in the season, but we did manage 5 on some private property and one more on Zaleski. no pics this time, but dog done me proud as did the shooter. 6 greys this time of year is a VERY good day. Lefty made lots of trees, but most of them were dens.

got out for a few hours this morning. nothing stirring early, barely any tracks in the 2" of fresh snow we got last night. after striking out in two reliable spots, I decided to go adventurin' in a woodlot that I had not tried yet. by the time we got there the sky had cleared and sun shone brightly squirrels musta came outta their holes for a while. Lefty rustled up three for us in no time. got really windy after noon so we called it quits.
