Isn't it great when either works like that Teej? Not because it makes you look good, but because it builds some excitement for the person you are trying to get turned onto it.

Yeah I was pretty pumped, but I was sure to explain to him it doesn't always work out that easy lol Don't wanna get his hopes up. My luck we'll go out opening day and not hear a bird and have a 180" buck still holding stroll up and kick our decoy over.

That would still be an awesome encounter!

Set up my blind in the Big Holler yesterday. This is where I killed my last bird and it's a great place to hear birds. Tough to call them down there, but it's fun when it happens! I set this up to take the wife and kid a couple times.

Looking W down the holler...

Looking E.

Been out a couple of times and saw one flock of hens all by them selves and a single Jen by herself.... No toms yet....
Did see a decent 8 point still carrying both sides... Looked too be just outside of the ears as it was running away.... Was hoping too see one or both sides come plopping off of as it ran into a thicket lol....

Looks promising , have ya killed many birds there ?

I've been road scouting some , and re upping permission at spots . My schedule hasn't allowed me to listen to anything on the roost yet . Seeing strutters and a couple landowners said they've heard birds gobbling .

Got a new box of hevi shot in the mail , and a new facemask .

I plan on making it out this Sunday morning to listen. I have a good idea of where the birds are on one of my spots.

One. It all depends on where they roost as to what the chances are of getting them down there. But if they'll come in to the field, it's all but over. I've missed more than I've killed here. LOL

Truth! I tend to get to watching more than aiming. Last year I called a group of 6 jakes in to my lap. I was picking out the biggest when the gun just went off. My finger was ready before I was! LOL

The biggest issue with our farm is the birds typically roost in the big trees that make our western propety line. Most of the time they pitch towards the cattle pasture and the corn field to the west. The farmer spreads pig manure on the corn field and there's an abundance of cow pies right next to it. Between that and a nice open hardwoods hillside with 3 wide benches on it between me and the field, if I can't convince them to pitch east off the roost, I might as well take a nap. I tried again this weekend to get permission on the corn field with no luck. All that stuff to the west is leased.

Occasionally we'll get a bird that roosts in the middle of the farm. If I'd just hunt more, I'd kill more cause I can take advantage of that. But not scouting, not roosting birds and only hunting a couple times doesn't make me a productive turkey hunter. Some day I might take it more serious. Until then, I just enjoy being in the spring woods!

Jesse , one last ditch option may be to set there at roost time , let em get into the tree and let it get closer to dark then bust em off the roost towards your property . If ya can get em out of their routine , and into a unfamiliar roost sometimes they get really dumb . I've done this same thing with henned up toms . Let em fly up , then bust up him and his harem and scatter em like hunting fall birds . Come morning he'll be separated from his hens , and on a unfamiliar limb ....Usually the gobble early , and a lot . This is a last ditch strategy tho after getting schooled multiple mornings by a bird .

Nice dude. Sounds like a solid plan. Thanks for the input.

Birds gobbled good around here this morning . Had time to listen at one spot before work , tried to make it to another spot , but didn't really have time to listen there ..had to bail to get to work at 7 ...The way things are falling this yr tween the time change , crappy weather , and the season coming in slightly earlier is making it tough for me to listen much before work . Plus my better spots aren't close in ugh to the shop to listen there before work
