my Labs, Lewis and Clark, now deceased, both got attacked by the trash can after helping themselves while we were not home. only took once and they would barely come near the trash can after that, and if they did, they paid it no attention. Lefty has not yet needed a trash can beat down. Slick still might, but when it comes to behavior in the house, he follows Lefty's lead pretty well.

Interesting point. I never thought of that! This isn't a normal occurrence really... Actually very rare... But you may be on to something.
I had to sequester Remington today. Lulu is in heat and he's going to kill himself trying to rape her. It was funny at first, but not so much any more. He didn't pay her a bit of attention the first 10 days she was in, then a switch flipped in him, even without balls. Went out this morning and he looked like he'd ran 10 miles and she was soaking wet and covered in mulch/mud, and looked like she'd seen her own ghost. I never gave two thoughts to dealing with this when I got a female. She'll get spayed ASAP now since I don't see any reason to breed her (doesn't retrieve or swim).

Do you work with her a lot? I've never of a non retrieving, non swimming lab.
Enough to know it'll take more time and effort to break than I have to give her. It's clearly not instinctual to her like it was Remi. She's out of a long line of farm dogs and it shows. She's a great dog, but she's not a hunting dog as that's been lost through years of breeding dogs that haven't been worked.
I've hunted waterfowl without a dog pretty much since I started. I bought her to be a family dog first and foremost, anything beyond that was a bonus. She's a great dog for my girls to grow up with, but I'll need to invest in a legit hunting dog at some point. I'm looking at spring of 2019 for that.
We've kicked around the idea of getting another dog for a while now. My Tanner Boy is getting pretty old and is basically deaf at this point. Still young enough to live his life just fine, but can't chase the ball and such like the kids want him to.
Last weekend while at my parents house it hit me kind of hard. My old man said it was time to get another dog if we wanted Tanner to help in the training. He was right...

Another English Lab has entered our family today. Female this time.
