Safety harnesses and other safety

Stump

Ass Regulator
Great topic, I'd agree with Jesse, not everyone should climb trees. I've reached the age that I realize I'm not as strong as I used to be therefore I can't muscle my way out of the potential shit storm that may come up. I also promised my wife that when I'm out alone which is usually 2+ hours from home that I won't climb. I have a friend that refuses to wear a safety harness even after losing the bottom half of his climber, I rescued his ass and bought him a harness.... still no go. I told him I wasn't gonna wipe is ass or change his drool rag when he's layin in bed and the only thing he can move is his eye balls. Here's the deal, at the very least you owe your family to be as safe as possible. Don't be a dumb ass.

What about the disgruntled local? Those guys piss me off. The guy that thinks he owns the public land. I know I’ve been known to go toe to toe with one of those guys before. Luckily that was back in my prime and I wasn’t the one left spitting teeth out. Today isn’t a different world though...people don’t just get loud and throw punches. Someone’s gonna be a real low life and damage stands or something along those lines. Some real low life chicken shit. So be aware of those guys too. Times have changed...best CYA.

Another thing I’ve never understood is leaving treestands up all year, for years in a row. I never do that. Every stand I put up gets taken down and stored indoors until next season. I do leave screw in steps for a year or two, but never a stand. Cables and straps get inspected twice a year this way. Time to get in one now. 😀

It’s not related to falling but this thread reminds me of a few years ago when my friend Bill got shot by a hunting guest of his with a crossbow. His advice to me was “if you’re walking in the dark or low light have a light. Deer don’t have lights”.

This was one of those things that could’ve been avoided and was just a stupid thing to happen but people get shot hunting all the time. I’d add if you’re hunting with a group make sure you all know where the hell eachother are and don’t shoot at a thing moving that might be a deer (know your target and what is beyond).

Even if you think you have a place to yourself someone could be trespassing or wander over from a neighboring property or whatever. I have always had an eerie feeling walking in the dark since that happened and usually wear a headlamp now. Don’t want someone mistaking me for a deer or coyote. Sorry, rant over. Don’t shoot hunters or get shot by hunters.

At my local Walmart right now. I never knew such a product existed until this thread!

Same with your safety harness. If you fall while wearing it then it gets tossed. They are supposed to be replaced every 2-3 years also.
Correct on replacing if a fall occurs. 5 years on regular use. That info was in one or two of the links I posted. Unless they aren’t working for you? I know I’ve posted links in the past and you droid guys couldn’t see them. Let me know if that’s the case, I’ll get on my PC and repost. Thanks

To the guys that use hang on stands....a friend of mine was hunting in a screaming eagle tree stand years ago. (They had an ad that showed three or four elk hanging from one of their stands to show how much weight it could hold...after animal rights protests, they changed it to show a Volkswagen Beetle hanging from it). The cables that held the platform rusted from the inside out after many seasons of use during rain and snow. He didn’t have on a safety harness. He was standing up in his stand and in his words...”the next thing I knew, I was sitting on my ass on the ground”. It happened so quick, he didn’t even have time to react. Thankfully, he just bruised his ego, but it could’ve been much worse. I inspect my cables every year before and after the season...and change the cables every 4-5 years wether it looks like they need it or not. Better to go a little overboard with safety and ensure that you come home to your family. Look at it a a necessary evil...like going to the dentist. No one likes going to the dentist, but it’s a chore that you need to do.

My dental hygienist is young, attractive and she is well endowed. So actually I do look forward too going.... Just sayin.... 😂

I bought a new harness this year. I had my ordinal one from when I started.

Last couple of years got me thinking is it still a “safety harness” age and fear made me buy a new one.

We had the equipment at work that you could test a harness and extend the life expectancy of them. Prices had dropped on them over the years and it wasn’t financially worth it anymore....
