I built my retirement home for the boss lady, we ain’t going nowhere, got my 15 acres here and the family farm in Ohio.

my oldest son works for my wife, middle son in getting engaged to a girl from near Harrisburg, PA, so he could move away. The youngest is in 10 grade, but says he is going to college in Hawaii.

Gotta dream man...and those of us with kids will spread those wings at some point.
We were talking about this thread while bowling for Kenna's birthday tonight. We dropped Kaydence off at a sleep over on the way home. There's 9 girls there counting her. Tracie and I went to school with at least one parent for 7 of the other 8 and both parents of 5. That's small town life in a nutshell.

My wife hates the cold. She says she wants warmer winters and less snow. We've looked and talked about this for awhile. Our anniversary last year we hit the Smokies in March. Our purpose was to check out surrounding towns AND to get an idea of what it was like in the off season. The older we get, and the closer to having things paid off, the less I want to borrow for a second home. We are talking more about doing 1-2-3 month rentals in the winter. Or maybe a condo? Driving to maintain a property out of state isn't feasible with our current schedules. We won't rule out renting our place out "IF" we buy a second home. Just block off the weeks or months we want to use it for ourselves. With the housing market right now? Not a chance I'm buying anything. We've watched Smoky MTN area homes almost double. We have time. They will drop in value again. Not sure when, but inevitably, they will fall again. Every market has it's peaks and valleys. I'm not buying at the top. I'll rent.

Some of yall talkin about leaving, it's gonna get awfully expensive to come back for TOO events

It's a little far of a drive for me at 14 hours but flights aren't bad, the only problem with flying is being limited to what I can bring. Luckily Jim always has a spare vehicle. Even still I think I was back in ohio like 5 times last year. 😅

We decided on the west coast of Florida. I have been going there since the kids were toddlers because my in-laws had a place. We are a few hours from the Keys and the town we are in (Englewood) was off the beaten path between Tampa and Fort Meyers. It is growing like crazy, which I have mixed feelings about. Closed last March and hit it right. If I wanted to sell the place now, I would make a BIG chunk of change. Not going to happen. The housing market in the area we bought is projected to increase 30 plus percent over the next year! And this is in a 55 and older retirement mobile/manufactured home community.

Great hog hunting down that way, port charlotte, englewood area! Spent a lot of time hunting and fishing down there! Too many damn people in the city for my liking though!

Went too Kentucky this morning with a buddy of mine. He bought a truck online and we went and picked it up. Basically went right up 77 too 64 like we do going too Ohio, but headed west out of Charleston. Picked up the truck and headed home a different way. Through Tennessee and Virginia going by Bristol on 81. Nice scenery both ways. But when we crossed back into NC, for some reason it was like a weight was lifted off of my shoulders. Hard too explain, but I get the same feeling heading back home from Ohio…..

My vote is costal N. Carolina. Preferably Hatteras area. I could give a dam less about deer. Its a waterfowl hunters and saltwater fisherman paradise. I've applied for jobs in that area in the past and definitely will continue to do so if the right opportunity comes up.

When Jessica and I were thinking about places to move we completely wrote off the eastern coastal areas. It has been inundated so badly with political refugees from northern states like Ny and DC that the southern culture and charm that made them so attractive has been irreparably lost. The migration of these people shows no signs of subsiding over the next decade. Coastal counties surrounding Savannah, Hilton head, and Charleston have become solidly blue and it's only getting worse. The state legislatures and capitol cities like Atlanta have been overrun to the point that the whole state is in danger of flipping blue like we just saw in Georgia. I fear those places will see systematic suppression of their liberties over the next decade much like Virginia has recently experienced where the liberal at the capitol controls the whole state. The east coast is a favorite vacation spot for seemingly everyone in midwestern states. Places like Hilton head are perpetually overrun most of the summer with out of state vacationers. Some of them enjoy themselves so much they decide to relocate or retire there, many of them not people like you or I. Present company excluded, if I wanted to live arpund and deal with a bunch of no manners having northerners I'd still live in Ohio. Please note again I said present company exclude.

In contrast when we looked along the gulf, every coastal county from Tampa to Houston is still solidly red (with the exception of the back side of ponchatrain over in slidel.) I had to seriously ask myself, with the constant persecution of conservative straight white males, where is the best place to raise two boys into men over the next 20 years. If things were to ever hit the fan due to these deep political divides, where could I find a great population of like minded people. This country is not heading in a good direction and it's only getting worse. There may not be much we can do about that. But by God I can chose to live somewhere that will likely be the last place it changes.

Been trying to leave NJ for the last decade and now that I'm retired it's got to happen. Property taxes are outrageous, and politics are super liberal. Only problem is my children have their careers and spouses in good old NJ. Wife wants to stay too, so now the big compromise is Delaware or MD eastern shore. This way our children are only a few hours ride.
We have a rental in NC and it's the new Florida nowadays. Everyone from the high tax states is moving to the Carolinas trying to beat the taxes and crazy politics. Home prices have skyrocketed in NC/SC although taxes are still low.
By the way, I looked at a home in Delaware last week which sold in three days. I walked the property, about 24 acres of mostly hardwoods and swamp and man oh man did hit have deer sign. Very surprised, rubs all over the place and some big ones too.
I thought I was walking in Ohio !
