It's a matter of preference, but I'd rather lose power in the cold than extreme heat. With a gas furnace and fireplace, we can keep things pretty comfortable without fear of lines freezing. I'll be fueling up gas cans tomorrow to be safe, but don't dread this as much as I do the summer storms.

Agreed. One of the reasons the first thing I did in my Ohio house was install a wood stove. Just a heads up though. A gas furnace will not work if you don't have electricity to power the blower and fan. The exhaust blower won't come on so the burners won't fire up. When you listen to the furnace come on you typically hear a small fun run for a minute, then the whoof of the burners firing up, then the big fan for air circulation cuts on. You'll need to get 220v to that indoor unit for it to come on.

Yep, that's why I have a special pigtail hanging up down there to covert it over to the genny. Still need a generator in these circumstances, but I'll take cold over heat regardless.

Not on a home furnace but on some gas fireplaces, that double as your heat source, they will work with or without 110/220. The Jøtul I have for heat at the cabin will run the ignition and thermostat via 4AA batteries in case the shore power is out. Might be an option for some folks.

Of course the blower to move air across the hot surface to get extra BTU's won't work. But you'll have heat.

We have a propane fireplace, we rarely run the fan on (little noisy for my liking) it and it’ll heat the main area of the house and maintain 70*. It has a thermostat that’s built into the remote that operates it.

Definitely a bit chilly around here this mornin.

The cellphone app says 20*, but my laser thermo gun says 21* outdoors at the moment, and inside the workshop it's currently 75*. More firewood needed, so I'll be headed out later this afternoon when it warms a bit to round up some more. The story of my life.

Hardly ever locks up 100% any more, but no, ice breakers keep channels clear.

Deadly. I watched a maritime accident video the other day about a commercial fishing vessel in Alaska that got caught in freezing spray. They were catching wind from the port side and eventually started to list to port due to ice accumulation. Unable to bust the ice off due to hazardous deck conditions the captain made a turn to find safe harbor. As soon as they turned the vessel capsized as the wind was no longer holding the vessel upright and the weight on the port side rolled it.

The season pretty much closes with the closing of the Soo locks when they close for annual winter maintenance. This year It closes January 15th. Some local traffic but all 13 1000 footers lay up.

Friday looks like the weather conditions are going to be absolutely unbearable, freaking brutal!
Hope everyone is ready for it. I'll be hunkered down next to the wood stove with my animals all weekend.
