wind - supossed to be west this morning, but due to no real breeze and morning thermals it didnt reall have a direction.
sunny, cool
Temp - upper 30s
barometer - 30. 07 falling
moon - last quarter, allmost new.

Had 3 does come in from the north, same direction as the 2 small bucks last time I hunted this spot in the a.m. The wind couldnt pic a direction this morning, and unfortunately blew right at them when they reached about 50 yards. They never alerted, just got a little nervous and turned around and went back the way they came. About an hour later, a small buck passed through about 75 yards north of me. i grunted at him but he wasnt interested.

Then came the turkeys...

those damn turkeys.

Those cuts of venison look great!

thanks. I kinda like doing it, I used to cut meat for a restaraunt I worked at after high school. Sometimes I wonder if I might be able to make a few bucks doing it for buddies. I would love to make enough to buy a grinder so I can make sausage TOO. I make some mean jerkey, I'm sure I could do sausage.

wanted to get out this morning. totally unprepared. I have been working an insane schedule this week and didnt have time to get my hunting clothes washed from last weekend or get my gear cleaned up and reorganized.

clothes are in the wash right now, will be getting a few other things done and getting out later this morning.

cant hunt tomorrow morning cause I have to fill in for the apprenticeship instructor and teach the fourth year pipefitters "advanced pipefitting layout" sounds like a long 8 hours to me.

Sounds like a good hunt though. Keep at it Dante, those bucks are gonna start getting stupid and distracting the does any day now!

A.m. sit

wind - NNE 10 - 15 mph
mostly sunny
temp - mid 40s
barometer 30.17
moon - first quarter

Drove by my primary hunting spot last night to see that the combines were in the fields. When I got to my spot this morning, they were parked across the street in an almost finished field.
I sat in my hang on stand just to the north of a doe bedding area, This stand is made for a northern wind and as I expected, around 8:30 a group of 4 came in from the north. To bad they used a different trai that put them about 80 yards to the west of me. I also saw a small 6 point.

Around 10:00 the combines started up and the cornfield next to me started to come down. I have never been in stand while the combines were working but have heard that the deer get pushed into the woods. so I decided to sit tight and see what happens....

....nothing.

After the field was wiped out I decided to use the sound of the wind to my advantage and scout a little. I found a very interesting spot.

Last fall, for some reason, the farmer decided to plant winter wheat in one relatively small section of his cut bean field. Then in the spring, for some reason, he decided not to take it down. Instead, for some reason, he planted beans again right over top of the wheat. This area was cut on wednsday and now, this corner of the cut field is loaded with green clovers, timothy, and the wheat is coming up again. HHMMM... looks like a food plot to me. On the south west edge of this spot is a pond that dried up over the summer. On the west edge of that dried up pond is a line of scrapes the size of car tires. and a little ways into the woods from these scrapes are some very nice rubs. I wasnt sure what the wind was supposed to do this evening but I knew that if I got any kind of an easterly wind I needed to hunt this spot. I had some errands to run so i decided to run home and get a trail cam to put on the scrapes and check the weather. Well what do you know, the wind is supposed to come from the east this evening.

P.M. sit

wind - ENE 15 to 20 mph
sunny
Temp - low 50s cooling toward sunset
barometer 30.23 rising
moon first quarter

I set up in a climber about 50 yards south of the scrapes, along the edge of the dried up pond with the wind coming from about 11:00. At about 5:30 I noticed movement to the south. Of course, another hunter. I knew where he was going, there is a ladder stand set up a couple hundred yards south of my current position that i have never seen anyone use. Oh well, he is down wind of me, no big deal. About a half hour later, 6:00, "magic time"... A combine started up through what was left of the beans...

I decided that with the racket that macine was making, chances of a buck coming out and working a scrape were pretty slim. I figured my best bet was to get down, head west into the woods, and slowly and quietly work my way south to the road, a little spot and stalk was what i had in mind. As I worked my way back into the woods, i started noticing more rubs. I think i might be onto a good buck. About that time redcloud sent a text telling me that there was another truck parked next to mine, I knew who this was too, and my current route would take me right past his blind. So I had to snake around the guy in the ladder stand so as not to be a dick and screw up this other guys hunt either.

Needless to say, i didnt see anything, but I think i have a good Idea where to look in a week or so after things calm down a bit.
